Half Life 2 being sold before release date

bcn_246 used our news submit to tell us this bit of off topic information.  It has been reported from almost everywhere now that places like Bestbuy, Gamestop and Walmart are already selling Half Life 2 despite it not being released until the 16th of November.

Unfortunately for gamers, it may not matter if they get the game early or not as in order to install the game successfully you have to register your copy with Steam. This system is currently not accepting authentication until the games official release date.

Valve the developer of the game, released a statement apologising to customers and pointing out that it wasn't Valves choice to make gamers wait. They said that Viviendi the publisher has insisted not to allow activation until the games released and Valve would be in violation of its contract if it allowed early activations.

It was pointed out that Vivendi may want to reconsider their conclusion as making people wait for the most anticipated game ever may drive people into the illegal underground to get their game activated.

Reports keep coming from everywhere, stores such as Half Life 2BestBuy, GameStop and WalMart are already selling long-awaited Half-Life 2 game despite of the fact that the official release date was November 16th.

Unfortunately for gamers, you won't be able to play the game just yet. In order to successfully install HL2 you will need to register your copy through Steam, the system is not accepting authentication requests yet however. Here's an official update from Valve:

If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.
Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.

Before rushing into conclusions I think we should give Vivendi some hours to reconsider on their strategies, after all the anticipated release just happened during a weekend. If it's the case they don't make registration available until Tuesday, this will be a very dissapointing behaviour that may push legal owners of the game to look for other illegal alternatives to activate the game, that would be such a shame.

I dont see why Vivendi has to make people wait, oh well I guess it's their decision.
