I'll try and offer this as help to your unasked questions, and this'll have to satisfy you...
The hardware hack you are looking for for your new unit, as far as recording Movies or shows from broadcast TV here in N.A. goes, are totally un-necessary. As far as I've seen, the only hinderance to recording would be the implementation of the 'Broadcast Flag' by N.A. networks and local stations.. which so far hasn't happened, and I suspect never will.
Region code restrictions and other such restrictions that you want the hack for apply to DVDs only, and there are other ways around that.
You may have a problem if your new unit records to DVD using a proprietary format, as your machine, or one very close to it by the same Mfr. would be needed to play any DVD recorded by it (which, by the way, is what the machine needs to record in the first place - a DVD, thus eliminating your stated need to pump the signal into your computer so it can be converted for DVD.)
Unless, as I say, it's recorded in a format that will only play on that VCR, and no other.
Before you bought that unit, there is some research you should have engaged in, to get answers to questions you are just now asking. It might have influenced your purchase in the first place, as you might have found that some sort of PVR would have been a better investment than a DVD Recorder.
