GWA-4080N 0g03 is Max 2x? Will Firmware Help?

I’ve got a laptop (Compaq Presario r4000) with an optical drive that was burning at 0.8x. After a trip to the shop and back, I thought I should check it out. Now Nero DVD-Speed reports 2X CLV when I try the Benchmark test with a disk marked 16X (and the disc tab says that the supported speeds is 2X). Same thing with another brand marked 16X.

Based on what I’ve read about this drive, it should be able to go faster, with ZCLV (e.g. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=141586). Is there some reason why Nero DVD-Speed is only reporting 2x? Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with the drive? Would different firmware (e.g. tdb rcp1) help me? Or am I just confused, and don’t know this hardware/software area well enough to understand the facts in front of me?

Thanks for any help you can give – just trying to figure out if I’m stuck with 2x, and/or if there’s still something wrong with the drive.

Here’s the InfoTool report:

Your drive will not burn faster than 8x since that appears to be the maximum burn rate it is made to write at. I’ve never heard of any laptop slim writer than writes faster than 8x anyway.

The problem is that the media you are using is not supported by the firmware. In such cases, what the writer does is to use its default write strategy. With most desktop LG writers, this is usually 4x. However, I’m not sure about slim laptop writers, but it does sound like 2x is the speed used by the default write strategy in the case of your writer.

Your probably not going to get much decent firmware support for 16x discs, so stick to 8x discs. Those should burn at 8x. If you can only get hold of 16x discs, then go for Verbatim only. The reason being that of all 16x discs, Verbatim’s have about the best firmware support. If your writer can handle any 16x media at 8x at all, it is probably going to be Verbatim.

Oh and btw, CMC MAG AM3 is notorious for not being supported by older/8x writers.

Allright, thanks everyone; I’ll just stick to 8x media from the supported list; might even make the leap to ordering Taiyo Yudens instead of just grabbing sales discs from Best Buy and Future Shop.

You’ve all been very helpful, thanks again.
