GSA-H55L burns dvd but not cd!

[qanda]This thread is about the LG GSA-H55. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Please help.

I’m using Windows Vista with the latest updates and Nero 8. I have a LG GSA-H55L burner which will read any purchased cd/dvd without a problem, will burn dvds using nero to Memorex DVD-R 16x media (silver top), BUT WILL NOT BURN ANY TYPE OF CD-R OR CD-R/RW!

It used to work but stopped working a few months ago. I have tried Memorex CD-R silver, Memorex CD-R Lightscribe, and Verbatim CD-R Lightscribe media. The memorex is recognized in the drive but always fails in Nero or Windows Media Player while burning with a “Track Following Error” (1119). The Verbatim media is not recognized at all and windows reports it as “write protected”.

I have even tried opening the unit (already out of warranty) to grease the rails. Again, it can burn dvd’s but not cd’s. I’ve tried different burn speeds too. Please Help! If I can’t fix it this week I’ll give in an buy a Sony Optiarc 7240S once newegg has them back in stock.

(NOTE: I had the latest updates for Nero 8 installed but couldn’t get the burning to work so I tried re-installing and have not yet updated again)

Oh, and I updated the firmware to 1.06.

Hi and Welcome!

when you have opened the drive to re-grease the rails, have also tried to clean the lens?
And if I understand correctly, you get the same error at lower speeds?

I suspect, this drive is dying.

Michael

Thanks for the response Mciahel.

I’m thinking the same thing and last night already place the order for the Sony when I found one in stock.

Regarding the LG issue, I should note that I have two identical drives and have tried both of them in the same computer with the same result. I’m going to install Windows 7 tonight and if it is a software issue, things should start working again. If it really is hardware shame on LG, two failed drives both within 1 year!?

I’ll keep everyone posted for anyone in the future with the same problem.

Okay. If two identical drives show the same failure, then there might be other issues that should be taken into consideration also. If the drives do work on Win7, then there was indeed some software problem. Keep us posted

Michael

So far the verdict in Windows 7 is the same, broken. I’ll post again later if I get the drive(s) to work, but at this point it looks like two LG GSA-H55L drives both failed within 1 year. :a

Try using windows xp sp2 or sp3, I burned so many times cd’ and dvd’s without problems of this H55L almost 2 yrs now and still going fine. By the way I used PowerISO and Surething…

I have a similar problem.
I purchased 2 LG GSA-H55N drives a year or two ago.
Installed them into 2 separate PCs, and now they both crapped out.
Approx. 6 months ago one of the drives refused to recognize CDs any more (DVDs are OK).
Now, during the process of burning some audio CDs on the second drive the same thing happened.
Suddenly no CDs are recognized any more, neither blanks nor commercially produced CDs.
I did not burn more than a dozen CDs on those drives!

I contacted LG support and they confirmed: Yup, the drive is broken. It is out of warranty, so replace it at your own cost. Too bad, you are screwed - not their exact words

Would I buy another LG drive ?
I don’t think so !
I’ll get a Pioneer instead.

And now still going strong and I used ImgBurn now its more reliable!
Silverstar22 Maybe your having problems with your pc or the way you burn the CD/DVDs.
