So far, I’ve seen results with these DVD-RAM media.

  1. Hitachi-Maxell 5x DVD-RAM 4.7GB
  2. Hitachi-Maxell 3x DVD-RAM 4.7GB
  3. Matsushita-Panasonic 3x DVD-RAM 4.7GB
  4. Lead Data DVD-RAM 5.2GB (2.6GB per side)

At least, Maxell 3x, Maxell 5x, and Panasonic 3x seem to work reliabiy.

Panasonic (made by Matsushita) 3x DVD-RAM on GSA-4120B tested by Mr. C. in Seoul (who a few minutes from Yongsan market.):

Hi Kenshin,

Is DVD-RAM media cheap in SK? If so would it be possible to buy it from there somehow?

Ive just located a seller on Ebay who is selling Maxell (3X)4.7GB DVD-RAMs for $12 US for a 5 pack, the problem is that he won’t ship overseas (Im in Canada). So that works itself out to 2.40 US a disc, super cheap! Same ones I bought in Japan which are going at ~2600Yen for the same pack. These discs are great, I love em!

Sen, it looks like the Mitsubishi 5x DVD-RAM does not even burn at 3x.

My LG 4120 burns 3x DVD-RAM (Panasonic) in 18.19 mins.

#6

Not at all. North America is much cheaper.

#7

18 minutes? That’s very fast for a DVD-RAM.

Sen’s Mitsubishi 5x DVD-RAM worked correctly for 5x DVD-RAM. Due to Defect Management verification processes, its actual writing time is like that of 2.4x DVD+RW media.

#8

I have just re-checked my saved CDSpeed file, and 18.19 mins is the Transfer Rate time.

My apologies. :o

I shall do a Data Disc creation.

#9

Actually, I am disappointed. I thought there was something unknown to me that does magic for DVD-RAM burning in GSA-4120B.

#10

Hi hate to act like newbee but I have question, it may sound stupid! Ok the 4163 burns dvd-ram, and I went out and bought a fuji 2x it was about $15.00 USD at officemax. Can someone tell me what is the advantage of ram over rw, and I know it can be re-written 100,000 times vs. 1000. Im tring to understand when and why I would want to use one.

#11
  1. Rapid access. DVD-RAM responds more like PD media and MO media. More suitable for frequent reading and writing accesses of various types of files.

  2. Defect Management. Because DVD-RAM is more oriented for a little more serious data backup, DVD-RAM is more reliable than DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and CD-RW in both hardware and software specifications.

DVD+RW 8x media are a lot better for most consumer use, I think, because of the speed difference: under 8 minutes vs. about 25 minutes (for 5x DVD-RAM) and the cost difference.

#12

Kenshin

Thanks, thats kind of what I though, but you have made it clear.

#13

KewW,

You paid $USD15 for that Fuji2X DVD-RAM? I’m sorry man, you got ripped off at Officemax.
What a crying shame. I think I bought the same thing at London Drugs here in Vancouver
for $CAD8 , and I thought that was bad enough. They are Panasonic2X Fuji branded.
Maxell 2X also for the same price. That’s all they have are 2X. I don’t know where to
buy the 3X and 5X.

#14

@KenW

You can get Fuji 2x and Panasonic 3x discs in packs of 5 at Best Buy. Wal-Mart has Maxell 2x and Panasonic 3x. All for $4/disc

#15

I never bought any before so didnt know any better, the one at officemax was in a caddy like floppy disk, I had to break it out so I could use it, that maybe why. I will keep walmart as well as BB in mind for next time.

#16

maxell 5x dvdram

#17

5x dvdram is like 2.4x on RW media

#18

Break?! There are bulk media without cartridge. Cartridge-protected DVD-RAM media can be used many Matsushita DVD-RAM drives.

#19

Your result is a little better than mine. It took 26:54 for me. The same Maxell 5x. But it was 2.15x average.

My MXL11 5x DVD-RAM media generate error message when I try “full-erase” from Nero Burning Rom. It was the same disk I tested with GSA-4120B in the summer and it had similar problems from the beginning. (It wasn’t a new disk when I received.) Another Create Data Disc test after quick-erase.
