Great News! (at least for those of us in the 'States)

According to the latest on the Washington Post’s web site, the US Supreme Court has thrown out the FCC’s requirement that TV signal receivers (TV sets, DVR’s, VCR’s, etc) contain an anti-piracy chip has been struck down!
 :stuck_out_tongue:
See it here (I hope the link works):

I don’t understand, why would the supreme court throw out the idea when it sounds like it would benefit producers of media?

A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said the FCC brazenly overstepped its authority. Regardless of the potential for piracy, the judges ruled, the FCC could regulate only the design of devices that handle the transmission of programs, not ones that help consumers view or record them or play them back.
