I'm planning to buy this Imation drive, since it's much cheaper than other DVD burners available in my country (incluing LiteOn)
Doesn't this look like a LiteOn SOHW-1633S from specs and picture? And they also tout LiteOn features like Smart-X, SMART-BURN, VAS
Imation also released this drive recently.
This seems to be a rebadged LiteOn SOHW-1693S to me. It's not available yet in my country, and I can't tell when it's going to available. I don't want to wait for this.
My needs are fairly simple. I just want to burn DVD+R at 8x (with 8x rated media) and DVD+RW at 4x (with 4x rated media). I don't care about 16x burning speed, and dual layer burning speed isn't important to me now or in near future, however I might like to have good quality 8x DVD-R burning capability. Is LiteOn SOHW-1633S good enough for my needs?
Is it safe to flash rebadged LiteOn drives with LiteOn firmwire? I mean, is there any way of easily reverting to original firmware if I can't get the original firmware from Imation?
IIRC, LiteOn officially released firmware upgrade for SOHW-1633S to enable 4x DVD+R DL burning. It's very unlikely that DL media price will drop, but if it becomes affordable then I may think about burning some DL media at 4x. Did LiteOn's upgrade to 4x DVD+R DL worked fine for all SOHW-1633S?
Alternatively I can get Sony's SOHW-1633S rebadge, which costs $110 (Imation costs $100) and possibly Gigabyte's SOHW-1633S rebadge (not sure). Is it worth spending extra money for rebadged drives from more popular brand?
