Good dvd rw

whats dvd rw drive is a good one to buy… im having problems with convert x to dvd as i keep getting burning errors and they told me to use binflash and update the firmware but im too chicken to do it and dont no what firmware to install so im going to buy a new dvd rw drive the one thats in the tower at the moment is a Optiarc DVD±RW AD-5170S ata and the tower is a dell inspiron 531

I think your DVDRW if fine. No matter which drive you’ll buy as new, sooner or later it will be for good to upgrade its firmware. Try download the official one, which is a single exe file and it is a very simple procedure to upgrade it. Then, if the results are still no good, you can still buy a new drive

in my experience Optiarc drives have a low life-span. get a pioneer/samsung they last longer and burn quality is good.

is this one ok

will it work in my dell tower

Hi,

at first, check the manuals for your computer in order to see what connectors (PATA/SATA) are available and how to access the drive bay. Dell has excellent documentation on their support website.

Secondly, I would not buy a new drive from Ebay - a vendor with good reputation is the better option.

3rd: if you are interested in Samsung 223 series drives, you may browse through our Samsung burners forum

Michael

is sata
is sata
223x is SATA :iagree: - I have one myself, along with a 5170S. FWIW I don’t think your ConvertX problem is down to the Optiarc though…

i dont think it is because nero works ok… theres so many dvd rw drives on the market i still dont no what to buy the money ive got to spend is £30

@ andypp,

Suggest reviewing the CDFreaks Read First ‘sticky’ titled “The top 5 Optical drives of 2008” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/top-5-optical-drives-2008-cd-freaks-members-choice-249785) prominently posted at the very begin of this Forum and note the top DVD Burners that CDFreaks Forum Members have chosen.

No matter what particular DVD Burner you ultimately chose to purchase to ensure that your are obtaining the optimal performance from the New DVD Burner you will at some time have to install new current up to date Firmware.

Just because you purchase a brand new DVD Burner doesn’t mean it will have the newest most current up to date Firmware installed.

Your best bet is to install the newest most current up to date Firmware on your current Optiarc AD-5170S Optical Drive and see if this corrects your undisclosed ‘Burning Errors’ ‘problem’. Personally I don’t believe your undisclosed ‘Burning Errors’ ‘problem’ is caused by your Optiarc AD-5170S Optical Drive and/or its current Firmware. Numerous ‘Burning Errors’ ‘problems’ are caused by the use of poor quality problematic Media. Suggest obtaining known proven high quality error free Media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Media which has an excellent proven record of consistently producing quality error free results.

If after installing the newest most current up to date Optiarc AD-5170S Optical Drive Firmware and using known proven high quality error free Media you still encounter your undisclosed ‘Burning Errors’ ‘problem’ then would be the time to consider purchasing a new DVD Burner. Doing these two simple things might correct your “undisclosed” ‘Burning Errors’ ‘problem’ and you will be saving yourself your £30.

bjkg

i do use Verbatim 16x dvd-r discs
