Might as well replace the entire CD collection as MP3 files.. that'd be a more worhy project than spinning a cd-r around any more than you have to.. then he can have his first tablet/media player for less than $100 & buy memory cards (micro sd flash) that hold thousands of songs. Time to bring the big guy into the next deacde.. (kicking and screaming if you have to). A 64gb sdxc chip would encompass an entire music store's onhand stock these days.
When we have power outages here.. I like to put in some AA batteries and use my old cd mp3 player which also has FM radio.. makes me think the cool retro 2002 days.. My car has a cassette deck (remember those?), and I connect my phone and/or tablet to play music/audio.. with an adapter..
