I’m looking for a good dvd-rom drive to replace a cdrw drive that I have (this one goes to the wife’s PC); I was wondering if a combo cdrw/dvd would make more sense as I understand that dvd-rom drives are faster at reading than dvd burners and I would be able to burn cd’s with it as well. What do you think?

Why don’t you look for a BenQ 1650 DVD-burner?
It is a very good reader and an excellent writer for DVD and CD!
LG IDE Combo Drive Model CC-4522BI/BK is good but good luck finding ones…combo drives are extinct
Combos can have problems reading certain burned DVDs. Given that DVD burners will do it all for less than $40 delivered, step up.
