Modem & slow PC, so just the basics:
1633S on BS0S.
+ Maxell DVD-R 4x MXLRG02 - flatlined PI at <20, PO is excellent.
+ Ricohjpnr02 - 4x - Generally okay, mostly flat <20, peaks up to 40 at start.
+ CMC MAG AF01 4x
One time - Generally okay, mostly flat <20 PI, peaks up to 70 at end.
Another time - Mostly flat, <10 PI.
+ Verbatim 2.4x DL DVD+R
Even though these are the 'standard' and the 'best' DL discs out, variable burns with these on the 1633S.
One time - Generally flat <10 PI on the first layer, then immdiately peaking at 650 PI on the second layer, quickly dropping to 150 PI or so until the end.
Another time - same as above but peaking only around 170 PI at the second layer, then dropping to about 60-70 PI to the end.
Don't know if this is due to variability in the DL disc or the burner due to limited samples.
- 16x @ 8x (max supported, power calibration error when 12x attempted)
Memorex DVD+R PhilipsC16 - Poor, PI up to 200, PO up past 5.
- 2x MXLRG01 - Apple or Maxell 2x DVD-R. Burns, but all verify after writes fail.
- ISO.001 GQ DVD-R discs. Freebie, and quality is terrible. PI from 50 to 200, PO from 0 to 140. Avoid at all costs.
I've found Maxell DVD-R 4x discs to be very reliable in a variety of burners, but they've just replaced them with the latest 8x discs, which I haven't tried. Don't know if they'll continue to burn great in the 1633s.
I was definitely disappointed by the Memorex 16x DVD+R discs. The firmware doesn't do 16x, at 12x fails power calibration, and at 8x burns terribly. PHILIPS C16 discs just don't take well in this burner; and it reflects the poor performance of the PHILIPS C08 discs which were tested in www.cdrinfo.com's review as well. Avoid.
Everyone keep posting!
It's good to know the 4x Maxell's burn great on the 1633s (cheap at OfficeStores on sale), and looks like the Verbatim 16x +R is the one to go with @ 16x.
