Going with Nero 6--What Other Software do I need?

Hello All. I’ve been using Nero 5.5 OEM with my Yamaha CD-RW, and I love it (MUCH better than HP CD-RW/Roxio on my previous computer).

Now I’ve purchased a Sony DRU-530A DVD+/-RW drive, which came with Sonic software. I don’t feel good about the Sonic stuff, and plan to purchase the Nero 6 upgrade. So far, I’ve only been doing CD stuff, but now I want to do DVD movies. I’d like to back up my purchased DVDs, and would also like to capture movies from my VHS tapes and edit out the commercials. What additional software will I need? ADVthanksANCE.

DVDDecrypter.

Virtualdub.

Ha! Yesterday I was in the store where I bought the drive and capture card, and was talking with the sup, who’s a real techie type, and those are the same two programs he recommended , along with TMPGEnc! So, I spent last evening reading about them, and today I got my VCR hooked up to the capture card (the card and drive having been installed the day before).

Nice to have a confirmation here. With recommendations like that, one can feel confident investing some time in these programs.

Now if I understand this correctly, DVDDecrypter will be used to decrypt DVDs when backing up my collection. VirtualDub will be used to capture from the VHS/capture card, and can also be used to edit out commercials, and then to encode in mpeg2. Then Nero is used to burn. Is that correct?

Almost forgot… silly me. DVDShrink for your movie backup needs. Guide and download.

I’m planning to buy Nero 6. It claims to be
‘Your all-in-one Digital Media Solution Satisfy all Your Digital Media needs’ (See
http://www.nero.com/en/index.html)

It also claims to back up DVDs which is what I want to do. (See http://www.nero.com/en/631943753993336.html). There is no mention that additional software is required and in fact explicitly claims to "convert DVD movies to Nero Digital using the world’s fastest MPEG-4 audio and video encoder. Remove unwanted materials such as subtitles or bonus material from any DVD (9 GB), and convert and compress to fit an entire movie with DVD video and audio quality, all onto one CD. Nero Recode 2 does it all without any loss of quality! "

Why do we need these extra programs when Nero is supposed to do everything? There’s no mention that a shrinking program is required to make copies of your dvd movies. Have I missed something? I think I’m confused.

Another question. The Nero site mentions backing up DVD movies onto CDs. Don’t they mean DVDs?

Nero has Recode (which is a shrinking program) which is very similar to DVDShrink, except it will not decrypt (or copy) store-bought DVD’s (DVDShrink will), hence the need for DVDDecrypter (which removes all copy protection while ripping to your HD) if you want to use Nero exclusively. And there will definately be a loss of quality on some longer movies or if you choose to backup the whole DVD.

Nero’s mpeg4 conversion will not play on any standalones, it’s strickly for your computer and there will be a loss of quality.

Thanks. That’s cleared it up. I’ll go for nero and download DVDDecrypter.

Okay, got DVDDecryptor and VirtualDub. Haven’t tried DVDDecryptor yet, but VirtualDub gave me a lot of problems. It would run, but not capture, which gave an error about no capture card. The FAQ indicates that error is due to having a WDM driver for the capture card, rather than a standard card. I tried several different drivers, begining with the ones on the CD, then the ones on the website, but still no go.

For anyone else trying to use WinTVGo(-FM) with VirtualDub, the solution was to use driver 4.3 beta (4.2 didn’t do it) from http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/wintv98/wtvdrv43_19301.exe.

Okay, I downloaded DVDShrink as well. There seems to be a lot of overlap amoungst these programs. DVDShrink decrypts and shrinks. DVDDecrypt decrypts (what else  ?). VirtualDub edits and captures. Nero seems to do it all, except decrypt. Nero is not free, the other three are. I don’t mind paying for Nero. In fact, I think I’ll have to, for general purpose burning. So, which program to use for each function: capturing, decrypting, editing, shrinking, burning, etc.? Finally, AnyDVD looks very nice for decrypting, but it is not free. Does it do anything any better than the others? Thanks  !

I have backed up several DVD9s, with differing results. Having used Nero Recode and DVDShrink, I would strongly recommend the latter. I have found the quality of the output to be significantly better.

I would also recommend DVDdecrypter. It has worked for me on a coule of quite badly damaged DVDs, which would not play in my stand alone DVD player. I have now managed to rip them using DVDdecrypt, and make new copies which work fine.

All I need now is a DVD9 burner!

Thanks for the feedback on the programs, TLaw.

I’ve a problem with VirtualDub. I’ve set all the settings according to the tutorial, including YUY2 as the format. But when I go to Video->Compression, the only choice available is No Compression. How do I make the other compression choices available? I’m sure this is the wrong forum for VirtualDub questions. If someone can help me here, great. Or, if someone could tell me the correct forum to post this question, that’s great too  !

Hi Joe,

My plan is to copy my protected dvds free of charge. I’m not an expert , so i could be talking pants, but the following should do the job: 1) DVD shrink 2)DVD
Decrypter and 3) any number of free software burning utilities at:
http://www.dvdripnburn.com/
http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/audio/ripenco.html
http://www.dvd-replica.com/bao.php3.

Also DVD Decrypter appears to burn as well according to the forums and their website which unfortunately is offline at the moment so I can’t check.
Do we really need software like Nero with so much Freeware about?

Hmm… others would disagree. Are you using the lastest version of Recode 2? Except for decrypting, Recode is a more comprehensive program with a few more features. The ability to merge titles for one.

#14

Hi Baz63. Yep, I’ll give those ones a try :iagree: . Think I’ll also end up buying the Nero upgrade, though, 'cause my Nero 5.5 is OEM and won’t work with my new Sony DVD+/-RW. The upgrade is $50.

#15

Hi MysticEyes. So then, you would recommend DVDDecrypt to first decrypt, then Recode to shrink? Where then does DVDShrink fit in? And what do people like for editing?

And, can anyone point me to a good forum to post my VirtualDub question? It seems a fine program, but won’t do me any good if I can get it to compress.

hi,
i just burnt my first dvd backup for The Patriot (it’s long and i used the full disc backup including extras) using DVD Shrink only. It is all in one software. It has built in burner too.
it decrypted, shrinked and burnt to a Legacy 4x 4.7gb dvd-r perfectly. Quality is not perfect but hard to notice any difference from the original unless you stick your eyes right on the monitor. If you just backup the movie excluding the extras, it’ll be a lot better for long movies.
so just for backing up dvd’s dvdshrink will do the job.
i’ll try more with nero 6 and alcohol 120%(really good to copy PS2 games).

Hi yogiman2003. Thanks for the feedback. If you do try the same with Nero (Recode?), it will be very interesting to hear how you compare the two  !

I have heard that the author of DVDShrink is one of the developer of Nero Recode. The UI of DVDShrink and Nero Recode is quite similar…

DVDShrink can burn by itself?!?!
