GH20NS15 problem burning DVD-R

vbimport

#1

Ah man…
I’ve now spent quite a few DVD-R trying to solve this issue.

Okay, my problem : regardless of the software used (Nero 7 or 8, ConvertXtoDVD), the writing can’t get past the leadin. Nero shows 4% buffer level after the lead-in and then, the drive no longer writes but the software “seems” to do something and then pops up a message telling me it’s done.

OS: XP sp2
Motherboard : MSI K9N, Chipset Nvidia Nforce 550.

What is weird is that just 2 weeks ago, I was on Vista and all was working well. I’m still using the same drive, same media (Verbatim DVD-R and Maxell DVD-R).

Now, with XP, the only “known” good successful media is using a DVD+RW.

It really seems that since I went back to XP, I can no longer burn any DVD-R.

Here’s Nero’s LOG :
Note : I’ve noticed that the “medium in drive” says DVD+RW. Is that normal when my media is actually a DVD-R?

Update :
I’ve uninstalled any Nvidia driver and installed SP3.
Still doesn’t write after the lead-in…

Check with CD-DVD Speed’s Burst Rate test to see what it is.

Use better media.

CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-STDVDRAM GH20NS15 IL00 nvgts Port 3 ID 2 DMA: Off

That’s what I’ve been wondering, I tried to enable it, but couldn’t find anywhere (not in device manager as this is not an PATA, it’s a SATA) to configure the DMA.

For the media, I’ve tried with Verbatim and Memorex (ok, not the best). I thought Verbatim was still good enough.

And take also note that I can still burn a DVD+RW (I’m not doing multisession).

KTL, I’m terribly sorry, I really feel bad about this log.
(I’m now beggining to learn how to read these logs) and I’ve discovered that I copied my successful burn form my DVD+RW media.

Here’s the bad log where using DVD-R failed. Now it makes sense that it doesn’t say DVD+RW and INFODISK.

[quote=trankill;2131555]KTL, I’m terribly sorry, I really feel bad about this log.

No need to apologize, I/we will try to help.

This indicates you are using Verbatim 16x -R.

Can you check what “mode” your SATA is configured as (AHCI, RAID, IDE) in the BIOS?

Can you try on a different SATA port?

In the BIOS, I’m configured in RAID mode because I have 2 x SATA HDD setup in Mirror.

I’ll try a different port tonight.
This is really weird since it was working with Vista.
Right after it failed on me (and made me scrap yet another DVD-R), I used my INFODISK DVD+RW and it worked.

When using a DVD-R, one thing that I noticed is right after the leadin is done, the DVD burner LED activity stops and I see my HDD LED activity light up as if it was the one being written on. And the buffer level remains at 4%, never goes up.

Update on my findings :
As per KTL’s suggestion, I swap the SATA-Burner to another SATA port. It would still fail with Nero.

Finally, I uninstalled Nero and tried DVDDecrypter.
Same pattern, it would write the leadin and then stop at “No Additional Sense Information”.
Then DVDDecrypter popped up a prompt asking me if I wanted to retry and I did. That when it finally worked!!!

So since “upgrading” from Vista to XP SP3, this is my very first successful DVD-R. I’ll try to find out more about this “No Additional Sense Information”…

Is it the MSI K9N Neo with 550 MCP? In looking at the manual, there are only 4 SATA ports controlled by the 550. Since your hard drives are configured as RAID, SATA optical drives may not like that configuration. I’m not using RAID through my nForce4 Ultra (pretty much the same as the 550) and any SATA optical drives I throw on the ports work fine.

If you still can’t get it working, you’d either have to get a PATA drive or PCI-SATA add-on card.

Yep, you’re right on the spot! I have the K9N Neo V3.
It probably has something to do with the driver. Especially when using DVD+RW vs DVD-R. The sense module doesn’t seem to be rugged.

So far, my only known working medias are :
DVD+RW, CD-Audio, CD-Data.

Failing media :
DVD-R, DVD+R

Status with DVD-R (Verbatim 16x) :
It worked using DVDDecrypter with the first attempt failing. Then hit retry and it works (seems to overlook the sense module).

KTL, I really appreciate your input in my problem.

Hey KTL,
Just an update : it works!

Ok, here’s the rundown on my testings…
Burner firmware : IL00 (default)
Driver : Nvidia SATA/RAID v5.10.2600.925 (that’s the default for XP SP3)

I tried Nero 6, 7 and 8(trial) but they all failed.
Even DVDDecrypter so did ConvertXtoDVD (trial).

Then, as Nero 9 has been released, tried it (trial) and I’ve been able to successfully burn DVD-R.

This is the very first time I’ve been able to do so since I downgraded from Vista to XP SP2 (and SP3)

So status for me : works with Nero 9.

Glad to hear it’s working out. You may want to try other media types in your possession to prove it is truly working.
