Getting "Medium Format Failed Error" for BD burn in Nero

Hello,

I’m posting this request as a last resort. I’ve searched this forum in hope of finding an answer, and nothing has helped yet.

As for the history of my issue, I have a Matshita BD burner that came with my Sony laptop. I’ve burned about 40 Ritek disks that I purchased in Japan with no issue. My favorite electronics store here started carrying spindles of TDK BD-R’s, so I decided to try them out and got the “Media Format Error”.

I went through the standard troubleshooting steps of trying other media and got the same error for Ritek disks that had no issues before, the new TDK media, and also Sony BD-R.

I checked to make sure I had the latest firmware and also tried another burning software suite (StarBurn). I still get the same error, though my drive can read BD-R just fine.

I’m desperately hoping that someone can find a clue in the log file below. The only thing that seemed out of place to me is that the harddrive is showing as DMA “on” while the BD drive is showing as DMA “off”. If i was dealing with XP and burning DVD’s, I’d immediately check to make sure the IDE channel was set to DMA and not PIO. But since Microsoft insists that in Vista DMA is no longer implemented on the service level, it shoulden’t be necessary… But I can see right there in my log that at least Nero thinks DMA is off.

Please, somebody point me towards the next step (trying to avoid sending this laptop in for repairs.)

EDIT Looking in the Event Log, I see almost 5800 errors for CDROM in the error log. They are all “bad block” errors and they all occur during a 20 minute period on 6/4/09 which I believe would coincide to my initial problem with the new TDK media. I would think this would look like the type of instance that would make XP downgrade a drive from DMA to PIO. If that really is the case here, how do I recitfy?

I did find this odd:

I thought Blu-Ray was UDF 2.50 or UDF 2.60.

Thanks for the reply! I unistalled the drive from the device manager and re-installed, but there was no change.

Using the full version of Nero, the UDF is set as “automatic”. I’ll try to manually switch the setting to version 2.50 and see what happens but its recommended to keep it as low as possible for compatibility reasons.

Not sure about nero 8 and burning BDs, but the initial release of version 9 did not properly set UDF when burning BDs. So because of their short coming I always change the UDF to 2.50 when burning BDs. Also do forget to disable BD defect managment if you haven’t done so already.
