I am trying to burn free willy using dvd shrink 3.2 and it will get to 35% and freeze up with the error - failed to read file “F:” I have tried using dvdfab to file it but that isn’t working either. What can I do?

Probably a poorly pressed disc, try cleaning it , if that doesnt work try another disc.

so you think the problem is just a beat up disc? I have had this error a few times before, most of them are older movies. I have cleaned them but I do see some scratches.

Yes it’s almost certainly a damaged disc as that’s an old title with nothing special in the way of copy protection.

You can try either cleaning the disc or using repair fluid without any risk.

Some rental stores will professionally re-polish discs for a small charge.

Alternatively you could try re-polishing it with any of the various DIY methods regularly described online.

You try to rip it with h2cdimage . Then use DVDShrink on the .iso h2cdimage creates.
I copied this from another post & it is easier to use than it looks.

In it’s own folder you need :
h2cdimage.exe
wnaspi32.dll
I think both came with the zip I downloaded when I got it.
The other file with it is basically a readme in German.
the language it uses in the command prompt is German but it takes commands in English.
CD \ the command prompt to the h2cdimage folder.
I suggest C:\ for the location. That way you type cd \h2cdimage at the prompt & hit enter.
at the C:\h2cdimage> type h2cdimage.exe 0:1:0 filename -i
You will need to change the 0:1:0 to what fits your drive.
0:0:0 - master in the primary canal
0:1:0 - Slave in the primary canal
1:0:0 - master in the secondary canal
1:1:0 - Slave in the secondary canal
Let it work until it finishes. The reason I say that is it starts placing a dummy size .iso in the folder the size of the disc.It is only complete when the program finishes. However if it has completed most of the rip & just stalls because of errors the .iso usually works with maybe a small loss.
That is where you have the option to put the disc in another drive on the same computer & start the rip again same as above except use
h2cdimage.exe 0:1:0 filename (adjust to your drive as above) instead . You may not need to do this step but this is to let the different read capabilities of different drives eliminate errors.
When it does you will have a filename.iso in the folder.
This program has worked for me on a couple of fairly bad discs. It even works on encrypted discs when used with AnyDVD. It might also work with DVDFab Passkey but I haven’t tested with it.Passkey is beta & free for now.
h2cdimage puts the .iso in the same folder as the h2cdimage.exe is in.
There will also be a .h2i file .You won’t need this unless you are going to use h2cdimage for its’ more in depth functions I posted above.
h2cdimage download

DVDFab has no problems with Free Willy 4 so like Alan1476 and Wombler said it a dirty/scratched DVD or bad pressing

h2cdimage will only help if scratching is the problem. If it is a bad press I doubt any software will make the rip work.
For a Free Willy disc in good condition DVDFab even the free version should work fine.

Since this issue is with DVD Shrink and other programs are being suggested, I’m moving this thread to the movie copy software forum.
