Getting DVD Burn Fail on Samsung SH-203D but CD's are OK?

vbimport

#1

Hello everyone

I’m new here - found the site by Googling my problem.

Installed a Samsung 203D DVD Burner and it burns CD’s with no complaints but at the end of a DVD burn it fails. I’ve tried various different brands of DVD’s and get the same problem. I’ll attach the Nero log (It’s the Nero that came with the retail version of the DVD burner)

If anyone can help I’d be very grateful. One thing to bear in mind, I’m not very PC savvy. I saw a thread asking if the DM (?) was on of off - I haven’t a clue where or how to find out that kind of information - that’s how bad I am! :o

If more spec is required or any other questions anyone needs to solve the problem I’ll post it up.

Thanks for your time and reading my plight!

Here’s the log:

You are only burning 390 Mb, why are you using a dvd and not a cd.

#3

Good question! Thanks for responding jbv.

Checked the folder I wanted to burn and its is indeed 390mb. That log was not the best I could have used doh!

Every DVD I have tried to burn since install has become a coaster. CD’s are fine.

Is there anything else in the log that suggests a problem to you?

#4

Could you try a different type of dvd media. Verbatim is a good choice.

What brand are the disc you are using. Maxell?

Could be related to bad media.

#5

I tried using ahem Tesco (large supermarket chain here in the UK) and then yes - Maxell single sided 16x Write Once.

Do you know about this ‘DM’ on / off option? Should I be checking that? Don’t know what it means or where to find it.

#6
Do you know about this ‘DM’ on / off option? Should I be checking that? Don’t know what it means or where to find it.
I guess you mean DMA. Anyway I have the feeling that it’s not related to what you’re experiencing.

Sure Verbatim is (in general, not always) better than Maxell, but I rather suspect a defective burner here. For your information, DVD burners have two lasers, one for burning DVDs and another for burning CDs, so it’s not so uncommon to have one working but not the other.

You could tell us more, for instance do you always select @12X speed.

Also, you could download CDSpeed, use the “create disc” feature, save the graph and post it here.

#7

Thank you Francksoy,

I have tried using various burning speeds to be honest.

I’ll try the CDSpeed download you suggest and post the graph.

Thanks again.

PS: I didn’t know they had TWO lasers! I’ve learnt something!

#8

Hi,
Is there anything else in the log that suggests a problem to you?
Yes. The entry of your drive in the Scsi Device list is missing.

Also, I can’t believe your 203D came with that old Nero 6.6.0.8.
Samsung shipped 6.6.0.19 two years ago, and they switched to Nero 7 in Feb,. 2007.

Uninstall your virtual drive software and get the latest update for Nero 6.6 (which is 6.6.1.15). You might also try Imgburn which is free.

Please also provide information about the Sata controller you are using for your drive, and also its configuration (IDE/AHCI/RAID(whatever).

Michael

@ mciahel - Thanks for your message. I’m afraid I wouldn’t know how to do what you suggest - uninstall virtual drive and SATA controller info? Where would I find that?

Hi everyone

Firstly, let me apologise for disappearing - you must think I was an ungrateful so and so! We’ve had a baby - our 3rd - and he’s not been well so much of my time has been taken up with hospital trips and the PC hasn’t been on much as a consequence.

Anyways, I returned the Samsung writer and the supplier confirmed it was faulty. They sent me a Liteon LH 20A1S11C, saying the Samsung was no longer stocked and the Liteon was closest in spec.

… It does the same thing as the Samsung :sad:Nearly finishes the burn, but falls over at validation.

I’ve attached the log file.

What I’d like to ask is if anyone of you can see the same error for the Liteon as the Samsung? Then I’ll know it’s PC related and not my hard luck at getting two dodgy writers on the trot before I start mooching around the PC.

I’m grateful for anyone’s input, and apologise for not responding sooner to those who responded to me initially.

Have you tried Verbatim discs with this replacement burner?

AML002 isn’t the best media to start with, so I can’t really tell if it’s failing because the disc is crap, or something else.

Also, that’s a huge amount of virtual drives you have installed…try disabling MagicISO or uninstalling it while you troubleshoot the drive problem.

#11

Hi Arachne, OK, I’ll disable MagicISO and try again.

I haven’t tried verbatim no. I’ll see if I can pick a few up.

(Is MagicISO a bad word around here?)

(Is MagicISO a bad word around here?)
Hehe, no, but virtual drive/emulation software has been known to cause one or two problems with burning, so just while you try and fix the problem, it’s best to disable or remove it

Also possibly try a better quality disc if you have one
I’ll disable MagicISO and try again.
There is also Daemon Tools or similar present. Get rid of that also for troubleshooting.
