Freezing at end of burn

This problem has been plaguing me for months. I’ve tried everything I can think of, or have read on various forums, but it wont go away. Basically, my burn program freezes while at the end of a burn, always from 95-100%. The drive then becomes unresponsive, requiring me to reboot in order to keep the drives from spinning into oblivion, and of course, remove the coaster. I can usually get a few good burns before this happens, but it always eventually happens.

I have two drives, an LG-4160B and a Sony CRX230ED, both exhibiting the same problems, whether while burning CDs or DVDs. I’ve flashed the drives. I’m running windows 2000 SP4, my DMA settings and ASPI layers are supposedly fine. I’ve updated the chipset. I have tried various versions of Nero, currently now using 6.6.0.3. I’ve also tried Roxio with no avail. I’ve tried different media as well.

I’m quite sure its not an issue of the burning software or the physical drives themselves. I think it either has to do with Windows or my motherboard, but otherwise, I’m clueless. My motherboard is an ASUS P5P800. One thing I’ve noticed is that when I force Nero to crash, I find that another program, http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/SMax4PNP/ has also stopped responding; I’m not sure how relevant this is, but burning still failed even after ending the process before starting the burn.

I would appreciate any input anyone could provide.
Thanks,

get the latest onboard sound driver from asus site dont know how much it will help but that file you mentioned is related to it
open C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log , thats the nero burning log copy & paste the latest one but dont include neros serial yeah its likely not a burning software issue as you mentioned however the log may provide useful info

is your antivirus resident protection disabled while you burn?
check ctrl+alt+del for cpu usage maybe theres a prog that uses bit too much of it,get into control panel>>administrative tools>>event check for errors at application/system

I tried burning at a lower speed but it didn’t help. I’ll try turning off NAV next time I burn, but I’ve been using this version of NAV for almost 7 years on other computers and have never had interference from it. I believe my soundcard drivers are up to date, but its hard to tell with this particular integrated soundcard. My CPU usage is fine, I always try to keep it as low as possible, and I have 1gig of RAM which helps a lot during burning.

Below is the log of my lastest failed attempt.
(The generic drives are virtual drives by Daemon tools)

Thanks again for your help =)

Just a thought, are you using Windows native IDE drivers or do you have Intel or Nvidia installed. I know there have been problems mentioned on the forums regarding problems with burning DVD’s and sometimes that was the cause. Go into device manager and check the Ide ATA/Atapi Controllers, under driver tab Verify that it is Microsoft.

Thanks for your help, all of you =)

Phil_: Thanks for checking the log. I used the program you suggested and five drivers causing potential conflicts. I had them removed using the program and the registry program, and when I rebooted, only two had returned. I’ve burned a few cd’s since and have had no trouble, so far. Unfortunately, since this is not a consistent problem, I can’t be sure that it helped, but I really hope so.

As for my system specs:
Hardware:

  • CPU: Intel Pentium 3.0 GHz w/ HT
    MB: P5P800 - 800MHz FSB
    Memory: 2x512Mb PC3200 DDR-SDRAM
HD: Seagate Barracuda SATA 120Gig Partitioned into 2 drives
CD Burner: Sony 52x32x52x (On Secondary Master IDE - DMA Enabled)
DVD Burner: LG 4160B 16x Dual Layer (On Primary Master IDE - DMA Enabled)
Video: ATI 9600XT w/ built in tuner
Audio: Integrate Digital 6.1 Surround Sound, upgraded to Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! Advanced Motherboard

Software:

[ul]Windows 2000 SP4
Nero 6.6.0.3
Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.60.926 (Its old but I got it free from school and still get liveupdates =)
[/ul]

itzbinnice: I checked and all the drivers are Signed by Microsoft.

Thanks again guys for your help. I’ll keep burning and see what happens. If you have anymore suggestions, I’d be happy to hear em.

( ie the one that goes under your tele)
it says only able to copy fisrt track an if you let it burn it just records a usless file with little data
