If the burn process freezes while writing, it may be worth leaving the PC sit for a few minutes. I once had a CD pause during burning (LED went yellow and progress meter stopped), but after about 3 minutes it resumed the burn process. I only seen this happen once on me at 77% through the burn process.
Spyware is definitely one thing to get rid of off the PC. I had many CD-Rs fail with my previous Samsung 8x8x32 as a result some something hogging the CPU midway through the burn process and causing a buffer underrun. After running Ad-aware and removing some autostart programs, I haven't had a CD-R fail since.
To check what autostarts each time you boot your PC, check the 'Startup' on your start menu and the following location in your registry:
It may be worth cleaning the lens in your CD-recorder using a CD lens cleaning disc. These are available in most supermarkets and music shops
