This is slightly off topic, but you are very lucky to be able to write 16X DVD, not CD, with USB 2.0. In my experience most can't do it without buffer underuns, which could be covered up by the DVD writer's buffer underrun feature. Firewire 1394A (400 mbps) with good chipsets on both the laptop and the external enclosure seem to work o.k., but USB 2.0 usually just misses the mark. I only mention this because of others who might read this. Just to give praise to how good some DVD writers buffer underun features are: I have a friend who mistakenly wrote a DVD by using a USB 1.1 port. It took him two hours, didn't ruin his DVD writer, and the DVD even plays, but has a horrific scan. As they say "Don't try this at home."
