Sony to introduce super Playstation 'PSX' this year *updated*

Reuters reports that Sony will introduce a new Playstation this year that will integrate games, pictures and music. The device should include a real-time game operating systems and fast DVD/hard-disk recorders.

It gave no further details, but the announcement came on the heels of news earlier this month that the company would launch a handheld version of its PlayStation console, the "PSP," by the end of calendar 2004.

In a statement, Sony said the PSP and PSX "will mark the beginning of a new series of products that will unite the most advanced electronics devices with the leading-edge semiconductor technology associated with the game sector."

Unfortunately the company did not disclose more details, but it seems that it will be creating a powerfull console with more multimedia capabilities. The consoles are becoming more and more like PCs with less capabilites, let's hope the price will remain at the current level.

According to Slashdot: "Sony has announced a souped-up Playstation 2 in Japan. The machine, named the "PSX", comes with 120GB hard drive and a DVD+/-RW for recording videos and DVR features much like Sony's Cocoon. The machine will be released sometime in 2003, and come with a service that offers multimedia content such as video and music through internet connectivity. If you live in Japan, it will also come with a BS tuner; which is a Japanese Satellite Broadcast tuner. The new machine also boasts a real-time OS, USB 2.0, Memorystick slot, and a connection with Sony's Portable handheld, the "PSP". "
