Fixation error

The following is an error log that prevents me from burning data onto any type of cdr. I recently purchased the yamaha CRW-F1E T@2 burner and it started giving me this problem after I burned 10 Linux ISO image cd’s. I have researched it on the Internet and have found nothing specifically dealing with this problem. I have upgraded the firmware, re-installed drivers (got updates), remove the drive totally and started fresh, tried different burning programs (earlier and later versions) all to no avail. It just keeps making coasters with the error “Could not perform fixation” write failed at 16x; yes I’ve tried reducing speed and increasing. I’ve also tried different cdr brands and different data to burn to cd. I have had no luck. Does anyone know of a reported problem with these drives, or is there a fix?

OK - let’s see what we can do.

Firstly - can you edit the post to remove the Nero serial number from the top - thanks.

There’s two things that are potentially troublesome. The first is that both the drives on your secondary IDE channel are in PIO mode, which isn’t a good idea. Uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel using the Device Manager (as an Administrator) and rebooting should hopefully solve that. Once you’ve rebooted, double click the Secondary IDE Channel device in Device Manager (again, as an Administrator), and hopefully the Advanced Settings tab will then show both drives running in a DMA mode.

The second thing that might be causing you trouble is that you’ve got some Roxio drivers hanging around - it might be better to uninstall any Roxio software and try again with Nero. It might also be a good idea to upgrade to the latest version of Nero 5.5, which is 5.5.10.56, available from ftp://ftp4.nero.com/Nero551056.exe.

I haven’t got details on what Sense Code 0x73, Qual 0x03 is precisely, but Nero is interpreting it as a Power Calibration error. I would try the various things I’ve mentioned, then try simulating a burn at your chosen speed. If it passes a simulation and fails when actually trying to burn a disc, then the most likely explanation is that the drive itself has failed. I would try the other things first, though, to be sure.

You may like to switch your experimentation to CD-RW media so as not potentially to waste any CD-R media. I would also suggest different CD-R media, but you appear already to have tried that.

A final intriguing option with the drive you have is to attempt to record a T@2 and see if it looks as you’d expect. However, this might be impossible if you can’t get beyond the power calibration stage.

Thanks for the efforts, but this drive is destined for coaster maker hell.
I completed all of your troubleshooting points to no avail. I get the same fixation error everytime.
I did successfully complete a simulation; which led me to contacting Yamaha in attempts at having them replace the drive due to warranty issues.
I felt confident about the upgrade on nero for a minute, but no luck.
The PIO was changed to DMA (unfortunately I wasn’t burning from cd-rom to cd-rom, but it makes sense to have it DMA.

Thanks again David

My pleasure. The changes you made were worthwhile anyway.

As the drive is completing simulations OK but failing to write to an actual disc, I think the only thing you can do is RMA it - it does sound like a failed drive.

David

#5

I was wondering if you fixed your problem because I have also been having the same problem.

#6

Hello, I’m having the same problem. I’ve checked what you aready suggest, but I have some differences. First, my config is different, also have tried the simulation and burn successfully only with CD-RW CDs. With CD-R CDs Nero present the next report.

Thanks in advance for your help.
