Fit for purpose

SCENARIO: I am looking to buy 4 internal 5.25" IDE DVD burners for 2 PC’s, these will be used for video, music but more importantly backups.

APPROACH: I have looked through many pages of reviews but they all look exactly the same to me, little black or grey boxes, DVD±RW CD ROM blah blah blah, so I thought I would ask the professionals who are not trying to sell me anything. I guess like most IT kit the question is ‘how much do you want to spend?’ I am pretty flexible in this respect but do not wish to spend hours filtering brands, costs and spec to end up no wiser than I am now.

QUESTION: Which of the many available drives would be best for reliability, speed and capacity, preferably 8gig? I will not hold anyone personally responsible and would appreciate some suggestions.

Many thanks

The Sony/Optiarc 7200 series is well regarded around here. The IDE version is available still at a few online stores in the US. You don’t mention where you are at. If you are in the US, here is one site tha has it:
