First Time Burning

Hello all, a first time novice here and gratefull for any assistance.

I have Nero Express 5.5 and everything is up to date.

I have downloaded DVD Shrink and i am learning how to use it as i want to burn film dvd’s.

As i have never burnt a dvd before i thought i would try a film i copied to hard disc with shrink in re-author and copy files full of photos on another disc.

Both failed and i havent a clue as to why.

I dragged or sent the files into the Nero drag/drop and just followed the instructions, i dont have a clue as what went wrong, but this is the report from the film attempt—anybody got any ideas please ???

Hi and welcome to the forum

Your problem is that nero 5 is not able to manage correctly a DVD burner. You need to update at least to nero 6. I suggest you don’t use nero 7, because isa little immature, and have some issues not completely solved.

Moreover, to burn a movie you must select the correct option, not a data disc. See image

Yes i did use the dvd/video feature for trying to burn the film of which the report is of.

Are you saying that 5.5 isnt able to do this for dvd films?

I think Geno means that Nero 5 isn’t very good with DVD burners in general, no matter what you burn to DVD. Key words there being “I think”, since I haven’t used Nero 5 for a long time, and certainly not since I got a DVD burner.

Try updating to Nero 6 at least, you’ve nothing to lose!

Ah i see so what can i use to burn dvd’s that may be free or how much does Nero 6 cost?

Try here: http://www.nero.com/eng/Downloads.html

You can download a trial version of Nero 6. Nero 6 can be had quite cheaply these days, depending on where you’re from and where you look for the best deal.

Last time I looked, even Curry’s here in England had it at a reasonable price (£30-ish).

Thanks for that but will the trial version be able to burn dvd’s or will i have to buy the complete package

From the Nero site:

"Our trial versions are fully-functioning until their expire date.

It is an excellent and free way to see which product is the best for you."

So, I would have thought so!

Another question.

If i was going shopping for a made to measure or built for purpose PC to be used for photography and copying and burning dvd’s what spec of a machine should i look for or ask to be built for me? No playing video games not interested in that.

Reason for asking my machine is over 4 years old and is limited in it’s applications and has a rambus memory so i dont know if it could be upgraded as it is only 1.8 256mg’s

Ah. Now you’re asking the wrong person, my own two PCs are about 4 years old themselves!

Offhand, I’d say plenty of RAM and CPU power, a nice big hard drive…a fairly decent graphics card is probably required, since you mention photography.

Others will probably give a) different views, and b) more detailed input than me!

Edit: I manage well, for the purposes you describe, with:

a P4 1.4gig CPU (anything you get now will definitely be faster than that)
512MB PC2100 DDR RAM
120 gig Hard drive
Hercules Radeon 9200

As I say, just letting you know what I get by, perfectly well, with!

Well like me when you look at what is around today you probably feel inadequate.

Just had a yhought, when i bought my dvd burner it came with Pinnacle burning software but i had to delete it as it was causing a conflict on start up, do you know if i can burn dvd’s with that? if so i can rummage through all my old box’s and dig it out.

You’re dead right, I see people’s PCs on here and think about upgrading my dinosaurs every day…but I’m emotionally attached to the one I’m using now - it’s unreal the amount of money I’ve thrown at it, trying to beef it up.

Hmm, not sure about the Pinnacle software - if you dig out the box, and post the name of it (and version number!), I’ll see what I can find out.

Nope, this is obsolete software.

Just found it---- pinacle suite se version 8

Any good?----and i know what you mean about throwing money at it to upgrade

Pinnacle Suite? Not Pinnacle Media Suite or anything like that, just Pinnacle Suite?

I ask because I can’t find mention of it on Pinnacle’s site.

It depends on what software and the functions you will be using. I would say minimum for photoshop and/or dvd encoding, would be a 2.8ghz p4 (or athlon equiv.), and 1gb of memory, with two seperate HD’s. One only needs to be about 80gb (for software, os, etc), and the other should be at least 250gb for storage, capturing video, temp work space. Since you aren’t interested in gaming, go with a Geforce 5700 range video card or ATI 9600 range, dedicated fireware card if you intend to do a lot of video capture, or something along the lines of a Hauppage PVR250 for capturing tv and video files, and a good dvd burner.

Correct

This is what I meant. Sorry if sometimes I’m not clear; english is not my primary language

No need to apologise - help offered is help offered!

Well i am back for a short while now.

I reinstalled Pinacle and deleted Nero–re- downloaded my Pinacle updates only to find after 2 hours that that downt burn film dvd’s either, so downloading Nero free trial now and found Nero 6 for sale on ebay

It hasnt been a great day today.

Try with Nero 6.6.1.4 then.
