I’m having a bit of difficulty understanding the topic organization on myce but here goes:
Let’s see if we can help
How can I check for the latest firmware. I have been to Asus with no success in finding anything useful.
The manufacturer’s website is indeed the best source you can get. There must not necessarily be some newer firmware for your drive published.
On myce a orevious discussion said Lite-On EEPROM Utility, Flash Utility and Settings Utility could be used with the Asus. But then there seemed to be some reservations about all this procedure.
This is something for those who want some additional features, but are willing to risk the health of the drive and hopefully know what they are doing. Not something for Joe User.
- ) Where in XP do I find the Firmware listed? I did not see it in Device Mgr but may have been looking in the wrong place.
Device manager is perfectly okay. See screenshot, I marked the FW version in red.
CD/DVD writing software is also able to show the firmware revision.
2.) If the new burner Asus DRW 24B1ST has recent manufacture is the procedure necessary or even recommended?
What exactly? I have some difficulties with your question. My suggestion: stick with what you have. In case there is a certain problem with your drive, then see if you can get a newer firmware for your drive from the manufacturer.
3.) I have an older Lite-On (the noisy one) model DH2A4P. Again, how do I check and is it necessary?
See above. The same applies.
