Hi and Welcome!
Please provide the exact model number and firmware version.
After a while the dvd drive stopped recognizing normal "legit dvds films etc. The drive still reads data and audio cds. The thing is i tried flashing the drive a while back but I think i flashed it with the wrong firmware "ts-l632d".
Do I understand this correctly: You flashed the drive some time ago, the drive still worked and some time later it failed to deal with DVD media?
The inability to handle one type of media (either CD or DVD) is normally a sign of a laser unit that is failing. If the firmware you flashed was wrong, then your drive were dead from that time.
I went onto toshiba's support site and found the correct firmware for the dvd drive but now i cant install that firmware because the curent firmware is forcing the software to think that the drive is not compatible with the firmware. How can i fix this? thanks in advance for any help
Again the question: what firmware is currently on the drive and what firmware version did you download from Toshiba.
Additionally, without applying force, you can't normally flash a wrong firmware onto your drive. TSST flashers have a hardware and firmware check that blocks this. (See FAQ mentioned in my signature).
P.S.: I will move this to the Samsung DVD writers forum.
