The player is intended for dubbing your tapes to DVD. However, the best way is with a combo DVR (HDD) and DVD unit. That makes it possible to leave a 6 hour tape dubbing unattended which direct to DVD can only do if you want to further degrade video quality. Plus, most HDD recorders at least offer title split (my Lite-On lets me both split and combine titles). So for instance, that only 4-episode Doctor Who tape can be started dubbing, left unattended, then later the HDD recording can be split into 4 separate titles.
