To partition part of the drive FAT32 and part NTFS it will be necessary to remove existing drive first which will lose any data on it now, and any data should be backed up first if you don’t want to lose it. Once desired data is backed up right click “My Computer,” select “Manage” and select “Disk Management.” Select the external drive from list of drives, right click it and select “Delete Logical Drive” which will lose all data on the drive. Be very careful to select the correct drive because you will lose everything on which ever drive is selected, and you’d lose everything on C or other drive if it were selected in error. Then right click the partition, select “Create Logical Drive,” select drive type (FAT32 or NTFS) and size desired for that drive which will create and format format the size selected. Finally right click remaining part of partition and select drive type (FAT32 or NTFS) for remaining size. Note third party software such as Partition Magic may be used instead, but any data you don’t want to lose should be backed up because there’s risk of data loss either way you repartition.
NTFS is more efficient format for storage and more stable as well, but some OSs and devices don’t recognize it.
I have XP as my OS. I don’t want to buy partion magic becasue I wont be doing very many format changes. Not enough to spend money on a program for anyway. Is there a way to pick how much I can have of FAT32 and how much in NTFS?
