With Parthus Technologies making a licensing deal with Nvidia, Mediastream seem a likely fit. This may allow for some mp3/wma playback on the Xbox.

Parthus Technologies, a developer of platform level intellectual property for the mobile Internet market, today announced a licensing agreement with Nvidia. The deal allows Nvidia to include Parthus MediaStream DSP (Digital Signal Processor) technology in their upcoming Media Communications Processor (MCP) chip. Nvidia's first deployment of the MCP containing Parthus MediaStream is for Microsoft's Xbox.

MediaStream is the one of the industries' most flexible audio platforms, with the ability not just to power the expanding market of MP3 players. Mediastream technology supports the current MP3 standard but also has flexibility to upgrade to other audio compression standards such as WMA (Windows Media Audio), AAC or other emerging codecs, and digital rights management (DRM) technology. It seems with this added technology, the Xbox will not only be able to play regular CD audio, it may also act as an digital audio player as an added bonus.
