I just wanted to say that I ended up getting the MITSUMI CR-4824TU (Pacific Digital branded). I've been using it for a week now on RedHat 7.1 with great results. Here's what I did to start burning in case anyone else is interested.
1) First grab burn.py at http://www.silmarill.org/burn.py/burn.py
2) Edit two values in the script. set speed = 4 and buffer_size = 2
Note: This assumes your CDBurner is sitting at 0,0,0 on the scuzi bus - you can easily verify this by running cdrecord --scanbus
3) Create a directory to use and copy the files you want burned to CD into it.
cp whateveryouwant/* BurnDir
4) Insert a blank recording CD into the burner.
5) Now run the script.
python burn.py BurnDir/
That's it - you're done, just wait for the burn to complete now. Note: It took about 2 minutes to build a 635MB ISO image and then about 20 minutes to burn the CD.
Observation: The CDROM LED is off when the drive is empty, solid yellow when a disk is inside and solid red when the CD is burning.
Thanks to Andrei Kulakov for the easy to read and easy to use python script.
