External or Internal dvd/cd Burner?

I am in desperate help…I haven’t a clue on which to purchase. I need to get a dvd/cd drive burner…The one the is factory installed on my Compaq went tits up…Now,I’m an ole lady …
Not real great at installing hardware…I have put memory in my pc but thats bout it…
So technically, I’m challenged…But willing to learn.
I want a hearty burner…
Yet, am looking for something less than $100.00…
What are the benefits from internal vs. external? is one easier to install.?
Also, I have found that the media you use is important…
Some burners are very picky as to DVD-Rw…and cheap discs,such as the imitation brand…

Ups…:flower::stuck_out_tongue:

If you would give us the model number Compaq it would help us in recommending a drive for you. Installing an external dvd drive in a modern computer is very simple, since they plug in with a usb cable. But some older computers only had usb 1.1. You need usb 2.0 for an external burner. Any computer made in the last five years or so will have usb 2.0.

Installing an internal drive would depend on whether you need one with an IDE interface (the older style) or SATA interface.

So let us know the model number and we’ll go from there. :slight_smile:

All right. It seems your motherboard is certainly new enough to support usb 2.0. I’m hoping your operating system is up to date too.

Your computer has two SATA ports and two IDE channels so I’m pretty sure that your current dvd drive is using an IDE interface.

Choices for an IDE burner include this Sony/Optiarc at mwave.com: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=AA73212

this Pioneer 216 at Newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129023 (this also comes in beige)

And there are several others you can look at. I’m not sure where you are located though, and these two online shops only ship to the US. There is a Newegg for Canada, and Ncix.com is another Canadian shop worth looking at.

An external drive would certainly work, though they tend to be slightly more expensive. Like this Lite-On: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106283
