Since the appearance of $500 to $1000 external IEEE 1394 DVD-RW and DVD+RW drives, the price has fallen to under $300 for low-end drives and around $400 for the latest one such as Sony DRU-500XL (though not yet on retail store shelves).

Hi all!

Post number two here, did a search but didnt find what I was looking for so hopefully it isnt here, yeat

The title pretty much says it all, Im wondering if anyone has experience of external DVD recorders (I prefer firewire) and/or the Apple superdrives (powerbook version). A general “this is good/bad” list about them would serve me well. Going to use the external one on linux, os x and windoze.

There was something about pioneer DVD recorders that I read on some other site but I forgot what and where it was so any general info on them would be nice too.

Cheers!

There are a lot of external USB 2.0 and/or IEEE 1394 DVD writers. They are basically internal IDE/ATA DVD-R/-RW or DVD+R/+RW drives built inside portable/external box with USB/1394 ports. HP, Sony, Ricoh, IO Data, and many others. From what I have read, there’s not much interesting or extraordinary thing about them. They are all good and cost $50 to $100 more than IDE versions.

Read at VCDHelp.com’s CD/DVD writer forum.

The newest Apple notebooks offer built-in slot-loading DVD-Multi drives by Panasonic (Matsushita).

Hi all,

can anyone advice me where I can buy the SONY DRU-500UL for any reasonable price. I need it as soon as possible. The main problem is that I’m from the Czech republic (Europe) and the retailers I have found so far do not ship into CZ.

BTW: as far as I know this drive should be connected via Firewire and USB (2.0) interface. I’m considering to buy a TEKRAM firewire adapter. is it good enough?

Thanx for any advice

i think http://www.lynxdv.com/ send to CZ. they want £254.99

I checked the site u have recommended to me, but it seems that they have only internal version of this drive. I need the external one.

Thank u anyway.

Why not buy the internal DRU-500A and a USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394 case for 5.25-inch drives? Not much different.

Sony DRX-500UL, the external USB 2.0/IEEE 1394 version of DRU-500A 4x DVD writer, has just appeared in Tokyo. 59,800 Yen or nearly US$500.

Does it work well? I’ve had tons of trouble with my old Iomega CDRom burner and figure if I’m shelling out the dough for a new one, might as well go up to the next level . . .

Thanks.

I’m thinking, maybe this post should go in the DVD hardware forum, so I will move it there.

Not me but there are a lot of Sony DRU-500A users. The only difference is that DRX-500UL is external with USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394a interface.

Are DVD burners inherently more reliable than CD burners? Tough question.

Posting the same question in more than one forum is usually not allowed in CD Freaks. Thread closed.

I guess you are quite to CD Freaks forum but that’s no excuse to make a fresh thread containing basically the same question again and again.

Please read the rule here and do not cross-post. The normal action for a moderator to take upon this is to delete the thread without any notice at all. Thread closed again.

If you want to add questions to the original subject, just use your existing Sony DRX-500UL thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59294

You can see here how they look like.

I’ve been after the internal version for ages and just can’t find it anywhere (advertised everywhere but never in stock:( ) Since I need it like yesterday I was thinking of getting the external version which I have found in stock at some store in London, England. However, I was wondering if there were any good reports on this version (USB 2.0) although I realise it’s pretty much the same as the internal version just wondered if anyone had one and any good/bad experiences with it?
