External burner not working all of a sudden: God hates me

So I’m trying to backup my hard drive because my laptop just fried. I’ve already had a hell of a time getting the computer diagnosed, deciding not to fix it (new systemboard $250, $600 to repair!), and dealing with a cheap enclosure for the hard drive that only works at random on different jumper settings.

I’m using a friend’s laptop and my reflashed BENQ 1640 external through USB.

I’m using a Staples brand DVD+R 8x. I know it’s not the best, but I’m using it for now to test it because I know it worked in the past when I had my old computer r.i.p.

It can read data fine, but when I try to burn with Nero this is what I get:

Any help? And please don’t tell me my dvd drive is busted!

Hi,

just for clarification: this is a notebook HDD you put into that enclosure? If you don’t use an external power supply for that, this might kill the USB port it is connected to since many external drives need more power than specified for USB. So the USB port might be overloaded and even get fried.

3:02:13 AM #17 CDR -600 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1604
Device not available
F: BENQ DVD DD DW1640

Seems as if there were some interface issue. It is not a media issue.

Michael

Seems as if there were some interface issue. It is not a media issue.

Do you have any suggestions? Would it be a firmware problem? Are there any diagnostic procedures I could try?

Thanks for your reply.

I’ve just seen, that you posted basically the same question in the Benq forum.
