Error burning with DVD-Rs

Hi, I’m having a problem burning DVD-Rs. I have no problem with DVD+Rs or cdrs and cdrws, just DVD-Rs. When I tried to burn something, I would get an error message saying" Unspecified Target ettor" then it would say “Writing short lead out” followed by “Session Fixation Error” and “Could not perform end of Disc-at-once”. The DVD-Rs 'm using are Verbatim 16x and I’m using Nero fully updated to 6.6. What’s weird is on the screen to select the burning speed, it’s greyed out at 2x even though I can burn my DVD+Rs (Memorex 4x) at 4x (with options for 6x and also 2.4x). My OS is Windows XP Home edition with SP2 and my drive is a slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S. Can anyone please help?

Here’s the error log from nero:

This is the first thing to fix:-

DiskPeripheral : SAMSUNG MP0402H atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off

With DMA not enabled allsorts of burn problems can occur. There’s a sticky on the Optical Devices forum that explains exactly how to resolve this.

The other things is that 16x media will probably not burn well at very low speeds and it’s possible that your burner does not recognise the media so will only use a default strategy for burning , which is not good news.

The 852S only burns -R media at a maximum of 4x so trying 16x -R media is not the best thing to do. Stick to 8X +R media for that burner.

I think it might be the 16x media because I tried using Memorex 16x DVD-R and I still got the same problem. Thanks for the help and thanks for the DMA tip; I’ve noticed that sometimes dvd/cd playback has a little bit of skipping going on. Hopefully the DMA will solve that hproblem. Thanks again.

About the DMA thing, my settings were already set to “DMA if available” so that sticky didn’t really help much. The Primary IDE is set to “Ultra DMA mode 5” but the Secondary IDE is at “PIO Mode.” Is there another way to set it to DMA mode? I think I might have read something about doing it in BIOS or something like that, but I forgot where.

In the Bios the settings for the IDE channels & DMA should be set to Auto. The wording & actually options do vary so I can’t be precise here.

Did you uninstall the drivers for the IDE controller & reboot as this will often resolve the problem?

The other advice I’ll offer is to get another 80wire IDE cable & connect your Liteon to the secondary channel. If of course this is on a laptop this is not an option.

Have a search on the BTC forums, there is plenty of advice re. DMA/PIO settings. I know you don’t have a BTC drive, but the basic principles apply.

Thanks for the help, my drive is working better than ever, however, I have one question. Is it possible for the drive to switch back to PIO mode by itself? Because it seems that’s what happened with my drive. It was in dma ultra mode 2 before, but then I burned this cd using multisession and when I played back the video, i got an “avi: can’t find index” error(the rest of the files were fine). So I reburned everything on a new dvd but when I played the videos, they were skipping. So I went to check on the IDE and it was suddenly in PIO Mode only. Any ideas on how that could have happened?

XP can do this if it gets errors on the device. I did read sometime ago about a registry setting to prevent this. If I can find it I’ll post it back.
