Sounds cool, but what’s the benefit of this rather than just expanding the Ram available to the OS caching?

I don’t want to be negative, but perhaps the 8gb additional ram for a remotely usable ram drive could be better spent on a second ssd for raid mirroring or striping, or an upgrade to a faster model?

It’s the same issue that’s always plagued ram drives. RAM is simply much more expensive than permanent storage technologies, and unless your are operating a highly specialized number crunching server, accessing the same data repeatedly you’re better off using the ram for the OS, or the OSs caching.
