Well one thing that might help the music industry is if they swore off their abusive legal tactics, outrages fines, and all DRM.
I don’t know if they could pull this idea off with Blu-ray or not. However, if I were them I would have stopped selling audio albums long ago. I would have started selling albums on DVD or something like that. When you bought it you wouldn’t get just the audio.
You’d get the video for the singles too or video artwork of a song that didn’t have a video or maybe even live footage. The DVD could be filled with extras like song lyrics, in the making video or what have you. Heck if it was me I’d even ship a karaoke version of each song since it has the video on the disk too since that’s sort of a big thing in my boring redneck town. Just tell the fancy pants customers it’s the instrumental version lol.
Then if the stereo had a video screen it would play the video along with the audio, but if not it would just drop the video and play the disk like a regular audio disk. Like say in your car.
Then you have the iTunes model. If they had been smart though instead of Apple running the show they could have been running the show. They could have done a website where you can stream and listen to whatever you want for free. Put the most popular to the most obscure music on it and stream it. Maybe even YouTube style with the video. Then if you want the album you can buy it on DVD or Blu-ray or SD or something, and since the disk actually does contain something extra people would actually pay for it.
After all it isn’t like DVDs aren’t selling right? Well, can’t you pirate those too?
While the music industry was out trying to hump people with lawsuits they let a lot of other people come out with ideas they could of thought of first. If they had hired programmers, engineers, and salesmen instead of lawyers and Satan (whom I’m pretty confident is on their payroll) they wouldn’t be having the problems they’re having now.
Downside? Well, without the RIAA we wouldn’t of gotten to see how evil politicians can be when the RIAA comes running with a check I guess. That’s all I can think of.
