Editing an AVI file

I have Roxio V7, I’m on XP, and my problem is how to edit an AVI clip but be able to save it as an AVI after I’ve edited it. If I do it on Roxio it ends up saved as one of their type of files and I can’t add it into an existing presentation that I want to transfer to DVD at the end.
What program can I download free from internet or maybe use that’s already on my PC… what do I need please?

Try virtualdub: it’s free and if you select “direct stream copy” after all editings, you can also avoid to re-encode all the avi movie. In this way you can save the movie very fast (only a matter of minutes, according the length of the movie and the power of your CPU  )
