DW1640 Write/read speed suddenly slow

I converted Philips 8701 to Benq DW1640 in a Dell E510 and was very pleased with the results. (running firmware BSRB) I was decrypting at up 10-12 MB/s at peak rate and writing at very fast speed also, although I never checked with Qsuite. A whole 4.7 DVD will write from my HD in 5-6 minutes. I don’t know what happened but the speed suddenly dropped to where it was before conversion, barely making it to 2 MB/s. I did not touch any settings, although now I see that the DMA is off, but I do not know if DMA was on while I was getting very speedy performance out of it. I don’t know how to turn the DMA on? It does not seem to show up in the bios setup. Qsuite still says it will write 16X cheap media at up to 12x, but Nero read speed check will not get past about 1.7 MB/s. Can it be that the 8701 cannot really take the high speed firmware for the 1640 for long?:frowning:

This should help to enable your DMA:

use the “uninstall secondary IDE channel” method.

why am I showing two primary ide channels? one is DMA Mode 5 and the other is in PIO. Is it safe to uninstall the channel with PIO?

Yes

I had to uninstall both primary ide channels that unistalled my hard drive also (I think both HDs although both were SATA??) Any way upon reboot all drives were reinstalled. I am still showing two primary ide channels, but now both are DMA, one is mode 5 (presumably the HDs) and the second is mode 2.

The DVD transfer rate according to Nero is now back up to 16x, average 12x.

Thanks everyone for helping. Another success story of this forum!
