DW1640 BSMB errors with MEMOREX DVD+R DL

I tried burning a MEMOREX DVD+R DL with DVD Shrink but received a write error.
Should I try a different firmware?

you should try different media.

verbatim DVD+R DL (media ID: MKM 001) are probably about the only trusted DL media. also, what are your settings in QSuite? I had problems up the wazoo burning DL with BSMB, WOPC ON. The minute I turned WOPC off I was fine.

Nero isn’t the most recommended software for DL burning. If it works for you, fine, but most recommend DVD Decrypter ISO>READ mode to rip and ImgBurn to load up the .mds file and write. the .mds file that DVDD creates retains the closest approximation to the original disc in terms of layer break information and therefore is most likely to succeed.

Your problem is probably some combination of the above 3 things, with media most likely being the #1 issue.

Also this Nero version is hella buggy, update to the latest.

But better use ImgBurn for DL media (not Memorex).

Yes, WOPC was ON.
I turned WOPC off and tried burning again with DVD Decrypter and did verify after write.
I was able to burn the MEMOREX DVD+R DL with no problems.

Thanks!

I’ll upgrade nero and check out ImgBurn as well Chef, thanks for the tip.

I am still wondering if I should be using a newer firmware though (BSNB, BSOB).

And also, how can I make sure that WOPC stays off?

That media is poor.

Also, there are many reports on this forum that their drive was unable to burn DL media (especially Memorex) on the first try after a ROM reset. That is, the drive had to learn the media before it would burn it. At $2+, it’s expensive to make coasters, but there you go.

This mostly comes up when new firmwares come out and people want to compare DL write qualities on the new firmware with the old one. If the upgrade wiped out the learned media, they end up having to make another $2 coaster before they can burn again. Very ugly.

If you are having problems with burns, you do not want to turn WOPC off.

the onyl reason i suggested to try turning WOPC off was I had a similar issue. I could not get my verbatim DL discs to burn for the freakin life of me so i just started playing with settings. WOPC off did the trick. for fun, i turned WOPC back on for DL burning and it wouldn’t work.

I’m not sure what caused it, but i had BSMB firmware when the issue occurred. i know there are plenty of people burning DL discs with BSMB WOPC on, but that was the only way i could get the process to finish.

use verbatim media, that what i use to burn my discs and i get 95 or better quality with them. memorex is very media for dl. i love verbatims and buy them whenever they on sale

I went ahead and updated firmware to BSOB and updated nero as well.
I still have a couple of MEMOREX DVD+R DL left.
Now that I have updated these things I guess I’ll try burning again with WOPC on again next time and post my results.

OK, well I just burned a MEMOREX DVD+R DL with ImgBurn and I had WOPC on this time.
Perfect burn!
I guess upgrading the firmware and nero was all that I really needed to do.
Thanks guys!

What means “perfect burn”?

Did you make a disc quality scan?

I have a 1640 with BSOB and WOPC on (also tried off) and the memorex DL+ media and I can’t get better than about a 44% good burn. I don’t even know if these will play on my standalone. I have burned about 5 tries and cannot get decent numbers from CDSPEED. The last one went about 1/4 the way through at about 97%, with 4 PIF errors, then BANG, it shot down to 44% and had a freaky waave. i will try to post the results.

I have had disks play perfectly in a standalone dvd player with a zero quality(some sonics I burned before I found this forum) but that is not the real issue. The problem is the lower your quality scan the shorter the disks lifespan. If it plays now it will not last nearly as long as a disk with a quality scan of 90 or better.
