Hello friends,

I just ran DVD Identifier on the BenQ DW1620 G7P9 with an empty TDK DVD-RW 1-2x in it and get:

** INFO : An Empty Writable Disc Is Recommended For Accurate Results
** INFO : Drive = ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 [FW G7P9]
** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD+RW DVD+R DVD+R-DL
** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD-RW DVD-R
** INFO : Disc = [DVD-RW:TDK502sakuM3]
** INFO : Write Speeds (Supported By This Drive On This Disc) Listed Below
** INFO : GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)
Descriptor #1 = 3324 KBPS ( 2.40x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV] - [Invalid Entry]
** WARNING : Drive May Have Returned Incorrect Descriptors

and again, now with an empty Verbatim DVD-R 8x in it:

** INFO : An Empty Writable Disc Is Recommended For Accurate Results
** INFO : Drive = ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 [FW G7P9]
** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD+RW DVD+R DVD+R-DL
** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD-RW DVD-R
** INFO : Disc = [DVD-R:MCC 02RG20 ]
** INFO : Write Speeds (Supported By This Drive On This Disc) Listed Below
** INFO : GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)
Descriptor #1 = 16620 KBPS (12.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]
Descriptor #2 = 11080 KBPS ( 8.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]
Descriptor #3 = 5540 KBPS ( 4.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]
Descriptor #4 = 3324 KBPS ( 2.40x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV] - [Invalid Entry]
** WARNING : Drive May Have Returned Incorrect Descriptors

I used bold for the most important information in these lists. Now my question:

I am wondering about the Descriptor #1 resp. #4 lines in BOLD in these lists - what do those “Invalid entry” and “WARNING” entries mean? Was the media/capability table of my drive damaged somehow after updating (from G7L9) or does that just mean it is a non standard speed invented by BenQ for whatever reason?

BTW, turning on the “Options” -> “Advanced” -> “Additionally Also Retrieve … Using Obsolete Mode Sense Command …” just adds

** INFO : MODE SENSE Write Speed Descriptor(s) [Legacy Command]
** INFO : MODE SENSE Is Obsolete And Not Properly Supported By Many Drives

and the same speeds and WARNING message as before at the end of these two capabilities list.

Thank you all in advance for trying to help me

Maybe one of you can just post the “Drive Capabilities” DVD Identifier finds for his BenQ DW1620, together with Firmware Revision? Or just tell if it looks the same as the results from my writer…

With “G” f/w your drive will show up like > ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 [FW G7P9]

rolling56: On your drive, there is no “WARNING” message as on mine.
But in this message by zevia I found the same warning message. He has DVD+RW in the drive (B7T9 DW1620pro/retail firmware), I had DVD-RW and -R. So maybe 2.4x writing speed is supported with DVD+R, but not with DVD-R, DVD-/+RW - hence the WARNING message.

So I guess nothing to worry about. Ill check with DVD+RW back later.

Thanx for your comment. Always a good thing to be able to double check against others with known-good configurations/hardware!

Could be. Sorry i don’t have any -R/-RW’s at this time. I do have some +RW’s but my burner is busy right now and will post in a few. And no problem always try to help.

rolling56, you are right! It´s +R(W) that supports 2.4x officially and -R(W) which obviously does not. zevia had a -R in the drive, too. You posted a +R, I a +RW (in this post), and with both DVD Identifier does not complain about the 2.4x speed!

Question solved, and big thank you

Regards!
