I bought a DVR-A08XLA from BB, But when I run Nero info tool. It list the drive as DVR-108?

I am wanting to run the Piodata f/w for bitsetting…but from the different post about the f/w it says “not” for XL models…

Any info would be grateful.

The XL drives report as DVR-108. Do not use the Piodata firmware on a XL as it will kill the drive… There are no Piodata “XL” models so no bitsetting for you, sorry…

#3

You can use the Piodata firmware on the drive but you lose the XLA extra features.

Thanks alot,
Worker & LivingDay.

You just saved four DVR-A08XLA from being trashed.
I was so close to trying the Piodata firmware before I posted.

Thanks again.

As LivingDay said, your drives would not have been trashed. You just would no longer be able to use the QuietDrive utility and might lose any of the other XL enhancements. Flashing a standard drive with XL firmware results in a non-functional drive which should be recoverable using DVRFlash with an apporpriate firmware and kernel file.

You cannot mistake them, 1 has really nice fancy front and honeycomb top panel other is plain oem look

Didn’t work for me

  • Loading patched A108 v118 firmware on an A08XL drive.
  • tried with and without kernel
  • results were:

FIRMWARE ONLY:

Firmware and Drive type mismatch
If you want to convert your drive, you need to supply both Kernel and General

True… DVRFlash 2.0 won’t let you flash between standard and XL anyways, and older versions of DVRFlash don’t support the DVR-108

Your error is unrelated though, you’re trying to flash with a normal and kernel of different types.

"Your error is unrelated though, you’re trying to flash with a normal and kernel of different types.

eh? Are you saying a kernel from PIODATA (R8150008.110) and FW from A108 (PIODATA R8150108.118 or NIL R8100108.118) are needed to flash an A08XL with A108 variants? Or is it not possible to load A108 FW on an A08XL drive?

Above attempts where with NIL’s patched A108 v118 FW by itself, which failed,
with message hinting at “kernel needed.” Second attempt with both A08XL v114
kernel and NIL’s patched A108 v118 FW, which failed as well.

Note: NIL’s v114 patched kernel and FW updates successfully, as shown below,
to verify A08XL v114 kernel is good:

The files R8100108.118 and R8143008.114 are of different types since the fourth and fifth digits are different. Only the 6th digit should differ between the kernel and normal type files of the same type.

#11

LMAO! - so this A108 pair might work on an A08XL?

R8150008P.110 - (PIODATA Kernel)
R8150108P.118 - (PIODATA v118 FW)

Will give it a go, later tonight…

(Not that I really need it, but more curious how Pioneer FW/Kernel are organized…)

DVRFlash will not allow you to flash between standard and XL firmwares.

hehhe! - OK, I give!
How does one do it?

#14

Well, you could try using DVRFlash with the force parameter, like

DVRFlash -f X: NORMAL.### KERNEL.###

If that doesn’t work, then it just isn’t possible.
