DVR-109 Dying?

Hello,

I bought this drive back in July, and the problems keep coming. Now I can’t even burn cd’s, be it on good or cheap media. Every cd I burn with Nero fails, and DVD’s are a little more successful, but still getting quite a bit of coasters. I have DMA on, have an 80 wire cable, have it set as the master, and have the most current firmware. Could it just be that the drive is putting out on my after only four months? Alot of people are having good luck with this drive, but I am about to purchase something else, maybe a Lite-on. One other thing that is wierd is the box it came in said it was a DVR-105, but the drive is clearly marked as a 109, and that’s what my computer recognizes it as, even before any firmware upgrades. BTW, this drive always burns up to about 4% on cd’s and 9% on dvd’s then stalls for almost a minute, then starts writing again. Here is my last error log, which reports a medium error. These are on Sony discs, and although not the best, I never had a problem when i first got the drive. Thanks in advance, everyone here is so helpful, and hopefully one of these days I will be able to help someone else out, but right now I just want to bang my head against the wall. :a

Me nad you are in quite a similar situation.

My 109 i’ve been using since july has giving me costers with media that previously has never given me much problems.

Ritek g05…

I think the stress of burning 400-500 dvds or so since july might have something to do with it.

One failed burn’s log is not much to base a diagnosis on.

It says ‘medium error’, so it is likely a media problem, but it could also be optical pickup trouble.

Have you tried other types of CD media recently? Does the drive have trouble reading? Can you move it to another computer and test there? Trying one or more of these things will help narrow the range of possible problems.

(If I were to gamble, my money would be on the media problem.)

RAW writing on CD, 40x, ehrm.

Media problem, try a slower speed.+

That’s what I am hoping, but I was having a problem with some japanese fuji’s awhile back. I also have no trouble at all burning on cd-rw at 4x,so maybe I do need to slow things down. Also, is there anyreason why the drive starts burning, slows down, and then picks back up after about a half a minute? This only happens at the beginning of a burn, and then it’s fine, when it actully does successfully burn a disc.

Thanks so much folks

If it’s just at the begining then it’s likely just writing the leadin. It’ll write leadin, slow down a moment and then pick back up to burn the actual image to the disc.

gretagun,

I am having the exact same issue. I have tried it all from a s/w perspective. I just assume it is a hardware failure of some kind? Strange thing is I bought in July as well. Media that previously worked fine at 12x or 16x is mostly coasters now.

I was going to just go out and buy a 110… but maybe I should switch to a BenQ or NEC?

Hey Samson45,

I don’t know what the deal is. I used Nero Clean tool, and removed all Ahead/Nero entries from the registry, installed the latest Nero 6 , and so far I have burned 7 DVD’s without a fail, but the dang thing won’t burn cdr’s anymore. It has no problem with cd rw. Granted, I am using Sony cdr’s but those have never given me a problem in the past. I usually use Japanese Fuji’s (when I can find them) and those were supposedly made by TY. Even those are turning up more coasters than usual. I am going to buy some TY DVD-R’s and CDr’s from Rima, and if THOSE don’t work, I will just get a new drive. I am so stupid for spending almost a hundred bucks on this drive :o , when the DVR-110’s are like 45 bucks online, but I was so anxious too get a dvd burner.

I just bought a 110 yesterday – nice to be coaster free again. I might keep the 109 for ripping (that part still works fine) or return to Pioneer for a replacement (since I only bought in July 2005). The new 110 was only $59 (cdn $) so it wasn’t a big deal. The guys in the store said my problem was when I over worked my drive (I ripped/burned many discs in a row over a short time period) that I must have damaged it.

Good plan!

Having the same problem, I posted a message in the LG section.

My last 2 DVD burners died the same way (Plextor 708 and LG 4082B). I may have burned 50 DVD/CD with the plextor and about 150 with the LG before they stopped working.

The agony of my burners:

  1. The device stop to read or write CDs but works fine with DVDs.
  2. DVD writing begins to fail at a rate of 1 every 3 attempts.
  3. Writing becomes a headache. The burner is now an ordinary DVD player!
  4. Final step; You put a blank disc into the burner and it doesn’t recognize it anymore.

Robert

repeated burners dying could =

  1. Bad/ugly power supply/surges
  2. insufficient cooling
  3. burning/ripping with two units ontop of each other and not allowing a cooling period between batches of burns.

The heat could be a good hint. I remember last summer burning some DVDs in a row while it was very hot in my room (no clim). When I was removing the media from the burner, it was hot like a toast! This could be a kind of treatment that shorten radically the life of a burner.
