DVR-108 and Shintaro 8x DVD-R

Has anyone tried this combination? I’ve just got my new drive installed and grabbed a spindle of Shintaro *x DVD-Rs as i saw that Pioneer Australia said that these DVDs were good for overspeeding, but when I insert the DVD to burn stuff, Nero suddenly does not let me select any speed above 4X

Has anyone else tried these 2 together before and had similar results?

I’ve checked the PIO/UDMA and it’s set on UDMA. I’ve also disconnected the other drive on that IDE channel and tried swapping it to the primary and secondary IDE channel. I also flashed to 1.14 firmware

Any tips would be great as I have a 50 spindle of these 8X DVDs.

P.S. was $68 a good price to pay for 50 Shintaros? Right now it seems like I’ve been jibbed since they only go 4x. on this drive

Check the Media ID using DVDInfoPro. I’m sure that you’ll find that they’re “CMC MAG E01”. Excellent media IMHO!

I have successfully used the Shintaro 8x +R (note the ‘+’) and they are recognised by the 108 for speeds up to 16x. I have not tried the -R’ though. Your price sounds good, I paid $85 Australian for my spindle of 50 +Rs.

I gave Dvdinfopro a try as suggested and came up with the info below.

It says the manufacturer rates it at 8X but CLV at 4X could this be why the drive will not go to 8x?

you can get Ritek G05 8x -Rs for around $50-55 a spindle of 50 which work at 12x, or Ritek 8x +Rs I’ve bought a couple of spindles for $50 each (although the first only worked at 4x too ><)

I’m pretty sure that I got a dud spindle of DVDs now. I just went down to JB to pick up a shintaro 8x +r and a -R and they both work at 16x and 12x respectively. Also got a Verbatim and it works fine too.

It looks like I need to have a chat to the store I got it from

Same boat as you. Pioneer 108BK (OEM From newegg), 8x Ritek G05 medium - Nero will not burn at speeds greater than 4x. Upgraded to 1.14, using UDMA (secondary master), tried both Windows and NVIDIA chipset drivers for my NF3-250GB. Also replaced the drive under RMA once.

ANy other suggestions on what to do ?

try new discs?

FIrst thing i checked. Fuji 8x -Rs, TDK +Rs And now i have a stack of these disks that should last me a long long time

All I can think of is the drive’s firmware. I have not personally used CMCMAGAE1s on my DVR-108, but they work OK at 8x on my DVR-107 and NEC ND-2510A…

Yeah change to new discs. That DVDimagepro should be able to tell you if the dvd can go to 16 X. The bit in the report about Available Write Descriptor should go up to 16x if the dvd can do it.

The place I got the shintaros from is having a chat to the shintaro distributor now… Will keep you guys posted on what comes up.

Would these have the same longevity as TY media?
