DVI Dual Link Cable

I like to understand what is the limiting factor of DVI Dual Link Cable.

I recently bought a DVI Dual Link cable thinking that all DVI Dual Link Cable should have the same capabilities. i.e. it will support up to 2K display. However, I discovered that it can only support up to FHD. I further discovered that are dvi dual link cables can support 2K display.

What is the different between the 2 cables (connectors and wire) that restrict the delivery of display resolution?

In addition, is there any differences between HDMI 1.3, 1.4 and 2.0 cables?
