This is a very old burner with very old firmware.
It can’t even read the discs correctly. There is no write strategy. Any successful burns were just luck.

Sorry for not getting back to you on the PM :frowning:
Dialysis1 is right ImgBurn is show in the log
I 05:49:22 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: SONY-D21-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x)…even though Sony is not good quality media your drive should see the 8x write strategy which the log shows I 05:49:22 Write Speed: 8x.

However since you stated in the PM that you had no problems until you got about mid way in the stack you may want to try getting a disc at the bottom of the stack to see how it goes, I myself don’t use low quality media because I have found it can be a hit and miss in every new pack.

Hi tommybee,

Additionally, you also have a number of other problems:

W 05:49:20 Drive C:\ (FAT32) does not support single files > 4 GB in size

I’m not sure why you’re using FAT32 with XP.
Img outputs to .ISO and as such, anything over 4 GB is a no go.

If you’re bent on staying with FAT32 (and you would need a decent reason), you can partition a portion of your hdd to NTFS and avoid the problem of a 4 GB maximum file size.

Also, hdd’s are cheap these days. With just 18 GB of free storage, I’d seriously consider another hdd.

You also have other software competing with Img, essentially trying to hijack your burner.
Img requires exclusive access.

W 05:49:26 DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) Failed! - Reason: Access is denied.
W 05:49:26 DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_DISMOUNT_VOLUME) Failed! - Reason: Access is denied.

Thankyou for your quickreplies.A bigger hdd is in the woks as well as a burner. Im not a computer genius an was wonderinghow do i solve my fat32 problem? Also the issue with competing software competing with imgburn to hijack my burner. How would you solve that issue? How do i give imgburn exclusive acess?P.S. Whats a good quality burner to get without having to rob fort knox? Thanks for you alls time an help. TB

First, you should follow your plans with getting a new burner and HDD.

You can update the firmware to A304.

And for now you can try this, you can start ImgBurn and go to Tools>Settings>Write>and select page 2, there you will find Write Errors and under Software retries uncheck the box Finalise Disc - Auto Retry. And check the box Finalise Disc - Ignore Errors. Now when it has the error and ImgBurn ask do you want to retry, say no and check the DVD it will usually play fine.

The main reason the write speed only goes up to 4x even though they have selected 8x, is ImgBurn knows that the drive only supports 4x burning. That old 2003 LG drive only supported 4x write speeds.

As for the other questions, to find out what program it is you can run Process Explorer and find which program it is or try the program unlocker (this program actually has a lot of uses). You can get the explorer program at www.sysinternals.com or if you prefer you can get unlocker from http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

You can find a lot of good burners at newegg or other online stores, you interface is ide, you should be able to find one in the 25-35 dollar area, that shouldn’t break Fort Knox.

You can wait to worry about changing over to the NTFS file system once you get your new HDD or you can do as suggested above and partition part of you existing HDD to NTFS, which sometimes can be time consuming and a hassle. Or if you know all of your existing programs run on NTFS because some older programs only run on FAT or FAT32( I only mention this because the age of your burner suggests to me that you may also have some programs that may not be compatible with NTFS) but if this is not a problem, then you can back up your data (for safety purposes) and then click Start>Run and type cmd and press enter. In the command prompt you type C: /fs:ntfs Where the C is, is the volume you are converting, this will convert your file system over to NTFS, one last thing you can always change FAT or FAT32 over to NTFS without formatting, but you CAN NOT change NTFS back to FAT or FAT32 once it has been changed, if you find out you need to convert back, you will have to format your HDD.

Hi again tommybee ,

I received your pm and it seems “copyless” has pretty much answered your questions…
and nicely done I might add.
Better this way.

We tend to like all the toubleshooting dialogue on the forum. Everyone benefits…folks requesting the help are not confined to one member’s responses, folks following the thread, who may be experiencing a similar problem can avail themselves of the info. Also included are the folks offering solutions…none of us ever stop learning, nor can we afford to…

As copyless said, there are a ton of good quality burners out there and a number of decent retailers and most of us rate newegg at or at least near the top.

Visit the cdf cd/dvd burner thread and also take a look a newegg for starters.
Just to throw out a couple…

SATA interface:
Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B - OEM
$26.99, free shipping also, from newegg.
I just picked up one of these puppies…not that I need it, but couldn’t help myself…:stuck_out_tongue:

PATA (also known as IDE) interface:
Sony Optiarc Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 20X DVD±R Burner - OEM
$26.99, from newegg (looks like they stopped free shipping on this one…for a while anyway)

Keep in mind oem does not come with retail packaging…ie., no cables, no fancy retail box.

Don’t hesitate to pop in with more questions and please let us know how you make out.

Sorry…duplicate

Thanks to you all for your insightful ideas an direction.I’m gonna be chippin away at this till I get a resoloution…This is an older computeran hardware so …update time is here again. Thanks again.
