DVDFAB 9.X won't function

vbimport

#1

I am a total noob, so I apologize in advance for my lack of experience with some of the higher level discussions (at least they were high level to me) that I have tried to understand in this fantastic forum.

I am running windows 8.1, with ESET smart security 7 and any version of DVDFAB 9.X that I try to run, either stalls on opening the DVD or simply just gets to the copy screen and then fails.

In a XP environment the same program and DVD works flawlessly.

The DVD drive works fine with other programs and it shows up as working fine in device manager.

The upperfilter is set to edevmon, but I already changed the name of it, and it had no effect.

I installed using “run as administrator” and the ESET logs show no errors.

I also tried with the firewall and AV disabled and got the same results.

I have tried everything that my limited experience will allow, and have had no luck, so I am hoping that some kind soul will assist me in the learning process here.

I have also read in other posts about checking the logs, but I do not know how to do that or where they are located.

Thanks in advance for any assistance anybody can lend.

#2

I forgot to add that between installations I used Revo uninstaller to uninstall the old version of DVDFAB.

#3

You can find the logs by clicking on the small triangle or down arrow in the upper right border of the DVDFab window. From the list, select Open Log Folder. The internal logfile is named dvdfab_internal.log and you can open it with Notepad or other text editor. The most recent entries are at the end of the file, each is date and time stamped. Post one of these from a session that experienced the problem.

It is not necessary to use Revo for normal updates. It can have unintended consequences. Use the uninstaller that comes with the product and in most cases you are better off to just install the new version over the old.

Thanks for the response and guidance signals.

I reloaded DVDFAB 9.1.5.0 and tried to copy a disc. The program got to the copy progress screen, but the DVD drive never spun, but the progress bar eventually got to 27%, before it gave the failed message.

The internal log follows:

I wonder why DvdFab’s logfile is referring to A:\ as source path…AFAIK,the A:\ is reserved for a floppydrive…

#6

I changed the path to A during the computer setup, do you think that could be an issue?
Thanks for the input roadworker.

#7

I’m not suggesting this is the problem but is a possibility since you used a third party uninstaller.
Uninstall your current version with Windows uninstall.
Then install the older version.
Then follow this guide:

The guide is by StormJumper retired mod of the DVDFab forum here.

Then try an install of the newest version of DVDFab.

Also does this happen with all the DVDs you try to rip or just a specific DVD ?

I’ve never tried to use A: or B: for a DVD drive letter.
In theory those should work since it would be rare to have a floppy drive.
I don’t know if W8 can even use a floppy drive. So this might be confusing DVDFab or Windows. I would give changing to the standard D: a try.

#8

The A drive is probably the issue.

#9

Thank you very much for your inputs cholla & dtm326, I changed the drive letter to V, rebooted and had the exact same results.
These results are pretty much the same, no matter which DVD I try.
The other computer that DVDFAB works on has U & V as the DVD drives, and it works fine on that computer. The new log file follows:

You have a very odd configuration.

#11

Thank you for the input alan1476, I will do exactly as you suggested, but for my benefit, could you explain what the GPU enabled setting is. I read on another forum that a similar issue was caused by the graphics card, but I could not understand the conversation.

The unusual configuration, is because I was trying to keep all my partitioned hard drives in order, so the DVD drive used to be A drive, I changed it to V, because others thought that might be an issue.

Thank you again for all the great guidance and feedback, this really is a great forum.

You are getting a read error on the dvd drive v:

1m 13.68s: DVD Copy
1m 13.68s: Source: V:/
1m 13.69s: SourceSize: 7246 MB
1m 13.69s: OutputSize: 4300 MB
13m 05.73s: read error: 3 101562 126116 103472 1 1 101562

Either there is something wrong with the disc or your dvd drive is acting up.

Go to Common Settings and open it.

Are you sure this is happening with all your discs, if it is, it may be that your Opitical drive is borked, because cpubound is correct, the error that is showing is a disc or a drive error or a disc error , its not reading the disc correctly.

alan and cpu, thank you for your inputs and guidance.
Yes it is happening with all discs, and the discs will play in the same DVD writer on the same machine, using Cyberlink and other software.
The reason it is reporting a read error is because the DVD drive is never spinning when the copy process started.
The same discs copy flawlessly in another machine. so I do not believe it is the drive or the discs.
I have somehow “borked” something for this installation.
The drive does spin for the “open DVD” process, so something in the copy process is not working.
I went back to common settings and unchecked the “enable lightning shrink”, which I did not do the first time, nothing changed, all the results were the same.
Thanks for trying guys, it is really appreciated.

Which is your output directory???Your log confuses me…

#18

You might try uninstalling V 9 & install a version of 8QT.
See if it will make a copy.

@ roadworker , I ripped a DVD with version 8QT which is what I use .
It doesn’t show the Output directory in the log .

Here it is if you would like to see it.I posted it as an attachment.
I changed the .log to .txt

dvdfab_internal.txt (2.28 KB)

The output directory is L:

Sometimes DVDFAB creates the output folders but of course they are empty. The issue is something is not allowing the DVD drive to work with the copy process, and I do not believe it is the upperfilter, and I do not know where else to look.

rightclick dbdfab ,run as admin and report back…
