I received delivery of my new LiteOn SOHW-812S DVD writer today. The delivery man threw it on the concrete floor at my front door while waiting for me to sign his clipboard. It fell from about chest height, hitting the floor with a thunk. Note that the package had no padding…it was just the DVD box wrapped in plastic filmwrap.
I’m going to be testing it in a moment, but would something like this reduce the lifespan of a drive?

I don’t think so, as long as it was in its retail package I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
The LiteON retail packaging has enough foam padding to absorb such a fall, so that shouldn’t have affected the drive. It’s amazing how many posties have that “I don’t give a s*** because it’s not mine” attitude!

You think that was bad? Believe me, that box went thru a lot worse on the way to your house.
I hope you signed it untested, or dropped by deliverer, it would hold more weight if there was a problem, and would let the delivery company know what their drivers are upto…
