Dvd writer skipping :(

hello guys
i have a LiteOn SHM 165P6S dvd writer which was working fine for the past 4-5 months but has currently started skipping video files. the things i find to be noticed are
i am using moser baer dvds and writing at 6x using nero7
the video files were clean and ran smoothly when on the hard disk
the dvds have no scratches when looked at closely
the media players, including my trusted vlc, stop and skip frequently but when i play the file back just before the point it had skipped at earlier…it runs rather smoothly
also, sometimes when the media player stops while playing the video, there is a krr…krr sound in the drive like a laser going awry or something (pardon my naive use of stupid terms to explain this point)
could you please tell me what the problem may be and what i can do to remedy this…also is there some software i could use to do some kind of performance testing of this writer?

Skipping video is often a sign of mediocre/poor media, and/or burn speed.

Can you pop one of those Moser Baer discs into CD-DVD Speed, and tell us the MID info (found under the “Disc Info” tab)?

Thanks.

You can also use CD-DVD Speed to perform a quality scan at 8x with your LiteOn drive with those discs. Save the resulting scan by clicking the floppy icon in the top-right, save the scan as a .png file, then upload here.

here is the MID info

Unfortunately, it’s not showing me the mediacode (it says “n/a”)…maybe because the disc has been closed.

Can you pop an empty one of the same brand in there?

will do in 2 min…doing that read test right now…green so far

Oh no…I meant a quality scan (under the “Disc Quality” tab), with speed set to 8x - you’re doing a ScanDisc

What you should end up with is a pic like this:

at 84.1% and 3775MB…it has shown a bad surface!!!
and has come to a halt…its at 0.00X and not going further
is dis d answer to my problem…bad dvd
shud i stop dis scan now?

woops…sorry…will do that…but first let me look at the media code

how about this

i dont have an empty one on me right now

Ah, thanks

Well, what I’d do in your shoes is switch to some better media - Verbatim can be found pretty much most places, and Taiyo Yuden media can be found online, which I’d also recommend.

You should be able to burn these brands/manufacturers at the rated speed for 8x discs, and 12x for 16x discs, without any playback problems.

can you suggest a good place to buy off online…by the way, many thnx, arachne
but how does the media code help you tell the quality??

this is the scan result
stopping at 84% itself

Well, it’ll help if you tell me where you’re located, as there are a couple of really good online stores, depending on where you are.

The two places I mentioned above will tell you the mediacode of any media you order.

People’s scans and opinions, plus good ol’ personal experience help others to decide if a media is “good quality” or not - also, some media will last longer than others (for example, Ritek G05 has been known to degrade at a fast rate, I myself experienced this, as did many others on the forum).

So far, the media of choice for archiving stuff is Verbatim (MCC004) and some Tiayo Yuden codes.

It’s a bit hard to explain in one post, also these are just my quick opinions, but if you drop by the Blank Media Forum here, all will hopefully be revealed.

And not a bad scan until it decided to conk out! Edit: PIEs (blue) are a bit high, though

well, im located in Delhi, India.

and i will drop by that forum…i have been bogged many times by the “defective media” issue ever since i bought this writer

Doh, I don’t know any places in India - maybe you could start a thread in the Blank Media forum asking if anyone else knows an online place that ships to India, as I know we have at least one other member from India who posts in there.

So there you go, you now have a good reason to stop by the Blank Media Forum

thnx for all the help, Arachne!!

You’re very welcome
