I have a Liteon 851s that was purchased as a Pacific Digital DVD RW drive.
I am running Win2K SP4 on a Pentium III 800 Mhz machine (IBM). I have a 30G Hard Drive (came w the computer) and an 80G Hard Drive (recently purchased and installed Seagate drive).
I ordered the DVD burner on 3/1/04 - received it on 3/9/04 - installed it on 3/13/04 and it died on 3/18/04. I called the local store (Staples) on 3/21/04 (12 days after I received it) and they abruptly told me to talk to the manufacture - I was on my own.
I successfully used this drive to backup 20+ movies using DVDShrink and Nero. I also made 2 backups using DVD X Copy Xpress. I also used Sonic Record Now DX to successfully make a couple of slide show DVDs using images from my digital camera and I have also successfully created a couple of data DVDs using Nero 6.
These DVD's were created on 5 different Memorex 4X +RWs (15+ copies total across the 5 discs - after which, I copied them to the -Rs or +Rs using RecordNow), 5 CompUSA DVD -Rs and 25 Khypermedia +Rs. After a while, things were going so well, I stopped using the +RWs and started recording directly to the +Rs and -Rs. All seemed to work fine.
Then I tried to backup "The Band of Brothers" disc 6 - my 1st coaster. So I tried "The Deer Hunter" - coaster #2. Back to the +RWs.
Now, nothing "DVD" works. I have tried DVDDecryptor, DVDShrink/Nero, Sonic RecordNow DX, Nero 6, and DVD X Copy Xpress - all to no avail. I have tried all of the half a dozen movies I have left to backup - nothing. Have tried making another slide show DVD using the same images as before - nope, can't do it. Nothing that I was able to do when I first got the drive works now (except creating data CDs - haven't tried audio yet). I can no longer create a readable DVD.
The burn process (for the most part) goes fine and I get a message that the burn was successful. I say for the most part, because using Sonic RecordNow DX, I do get an occasional error stating that there was an error while verifying the files on a data disc - not always, but every once and a while. I have tried all three media types I currently own (Memorex 4X +RW, CompUSA 2X -R and Khypermedia 2.4X +R) trying to get a successful copy. I now have 20+ or so very expensive coasters (10 +Rs and 10 -Rs).
I have spent hours burning DVDs that are just as useable after I'm finished as they were when I started (neither the computer or the DVD player can read them). Well, that's not completely true - in the 30 - 40 attempts that I've made over the 5 days (25+ attempts on 5 different Memorex 4X +RWs, 10 attempts on CompUSA DVD -Rs and 10 attempts on Khypermedia +Rs), I did get one Movie backup (the Client) that could be read by the computer (but not the DVD player) and one data DVD that could be partially read by the computer (some of the files were corrupted).
Note: All of the successful movie backups that I have made before I started experiencing the failures still play fine on the DVD player regardless of media type (on the -Rs, the +Rs and the +RWs) play fine on the DVD player - this is not a media incompatibility problem with the player. Those that cannot be read (appear to be empty) and cannot be read in either the 851s or the DVD player....
Now, this may or may not make sense, but the strange thing (at least to me) is that I can still create Data CDs. I tried it this morning and it worked fine.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!
