DVD +-RW TS-H653A burns cd's but not dvd's

Computer: Dell Dimension E521
Bios: 1.1.111
DVD Writer: TSST Corp DVD±RW TS-H653A SCSI CD ROM Device
Firmware Update: D500
Operating System: XP Pro SP3

The dvd burner never worked right from the factory!!! now the warranty is expired!!! (this is a friends computer).

The problem i’m having with the dvd player is that it will burn blank cd’s perfectly, but it will make a coaster out off any blank dvd disc i put in it.

I’ve tried many different types of burn software. Anydvd, convertx, dvd fab, and so on…

I also tried a dvd burner from my other computer into this one to rule out a faulty burner. My dvd burner won’t work in this computer but works flawlessly in my Compaq HP, and this TSST Corp will work on my Compaq.

This really has me stumped…

Here is an error log i got when i tried to run ConvertXtoDVD last night…

My crystal ball suggests:
Check Sata controller operation mode in Bios. Change to “IDE” (unless there is a Raid configured).
Under Windows, uninstall Nvidia IDE/Sata drivers (only these). Nvidia chipset driver installation tool can be found in Control Panel -> "Add/Remove Software"
Reboot and let Windows install its own default drivers.

Michael

mciahel, thanks for the input but i’m still not able to burn onto dvd’s (still making coasters out of them)

I deleted the nVidia drivers as suggested and rebooted…
Window’s reinstalled the same drivers…

I’m a noob to bios…

"Check Sata controller operation mode in Bios. Change to “IDE” (unless there is a Raid configured). "

Raid is not enabled in bios… I did not see an option where i could change Sata controller operation mode to IDE… How do I do this?

Seems you also need to uninstall Nvidia “MediaShield” software before you can get rid of the drivers.

If you still cannot use Windows internal drivers, then try a newer driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.24.html
Be careful what options you select during installation. Try to deselect the Sata drivers.

I just checked the manual - indeed your only options are Raid-Off and Raid-On. But maybe there are more options with newer Bios versions (no idea how old the manual is)
Then the only thing you can try is the drivers as described above.

Mciahel, thanks again for trying to help me out with this “dell from hell…”

I don’t see any sign of “Mediashield” installed on this computer…

I downloaded the nVidia driver from the link you posted…

Now I know why you said to be careful of what options I select for download because the computer rebooted to a blue warning screen and I had to do a system restore.

This program gives me 7 driver options for download…

In your opinion, which of these should I install?

I noticed 2 errors in Computer Management—>System Tools—>Event Viewer—>System
These errors where at the time I tried burning a dvd…

I have no idea what is special with the Dell version, so I can only guess.
Media Shield is the Sata driver. That’s the only one I would try at the moment.
You might also check, what uninstall options are shown in your old Nvidia installer.

[/QUOTE]Perhaps replacing the Sata cable could help. At least worth trying.

Michael

I installed media shield and that took care of the two errors that I reported earlier but still making coasters out of the dvds… The TSST dvd burner seems to burn about half of the file I’m trying to burn. So again I decided to swap dvd burners and sata cables from my computer for testing purposes and the burning process quits about half way through the process…

Here’s the log…(this time I tried a burn rate of 4x)

@ rrz2009,

Don’t want to step on Forum Moderator mciahel toes because he has been doing a great job in helping you with your problem.

Have you tried better quality blank DVD Media other than your SONY16D1 DVD-R Media?

In some instances SONY16D1 DVD-R Media manufactured in some particular Countries has proven to be problematic Media.

Regards,
bjkg

Well, I tried again today, but no luck :frowning:

This time I updated convertxtodvd to the newest release and used my good blank HP DVD-R discs.

This is starting to get expensive…I now have about 25 useless coasters

Here’s the log from today: (the Lead-in burn time seems high, my HP pc usually shows 0)

Hm. Average media.

This is starting to get expensive…I now have about 25 useless coasters
Re-Writeable media is already invented

Here’s the log from today:
Please try the proven ImgBurn for burning, and let your other software only create an Iso image.

Also, try uninstalling the Mediashield stuff you installed previously. Normally, you should be able to reinstall Windows default driver atapi.sys.

Are there other CD/DVD related softwares installed? If so, then get rid of them - including any virtual drive software.

Michael

 mciahel problems are solved…many many thanks…

I left mediashield installed since it cured 2 errors i was getting earlier.

I manually changed the nVidia controllers to Standard Duel Channel PCI IDE Controllers…

Presto…Problems solved

I really hate to give this computer back to my nephew since it’s twice the computer I own :frowning:

Again, THANK YOU!

So it was the Nvidia drivers then - as suspected.

Cheers,
Michael

Ahhh, I have the exact same problem with that drive. But I’m a bit lost when trying to follow your solution. What does this bit mean?

I manually changed the nVidia controllers to Standard Duel Channel PCI IDE Controllers…

Also I’m using W7RC, in case that’s relevant. The nForce beta only listed SMU and Display.

Thanks in advance

Dear rrz2009,

I was wondering if you could walk me through your solution?

I have a similar system as yours and an identical problem. I have a Dell Dimension E520 Bios 1.10 2.3.2. running XP SP3. I have a TSST Corp DVD±RW TS-H653A that could always burn CDs, read DVDs, but could never burn DVDs. I tried name brand -R and +R discs and upgraded the firmware to D500, but still no success. I thought this was a lost cause until I came across your posts. Based on your success story, I uninstalled my nvidia drivers (I thought they only controlled my GeForce 7300 graphics card - why would they affect the DVD writer?), but I still can’t burn DVDs.

Can you describe how you “manually changed the nVidia controllers to Standard Duel Channel PCI IDE Controllers” in your solution? Many, many thanks.

Eric.
