Have you seen this discussion over at the HP forums? http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-e-g-Windows-8/HP-Pavillion-PCDV71464NR-HL-DT-ST-BDDVDRW-CT10L-ATA-Device/td-p/899425
You don't seem to be the only one with issues with this drive. Laptop drives are not well regarded in these forums either.
You can try deleting the upper and lower filters. There is one mention of that in the thread I linked. But it is just as easy to do this with ImgBurn.
ImgBurn is a free, well regarded burning program. You can find it here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Be careful not to install any of the "extra" programs/toolbars that are offered with it. I do wish LUK would get rid of those, but apparently its the only way he makes any money off this excellent program.
Once installed, look at Tools-->Filter Driver Load Order and remove any upper and lower filters that show up there.
Not sure that this will help. The drive may just be a particularly poor quality reader.
